How does live TV work, exactly?

Hello,

Apologies if this is a bit of an odd question, but I was wondering how Emby's Live TV option fits into the great scheme of things.

My set up is as follows:

I have a server running NPVR and Emby.

I have a number of Raspberry Pis, running Libreelec (Kodi) with both the NPVR and Emby addon.

I therefore use the NPVR add on for watching Live TV.

I use the Emby addon for watching recordings (Emby watches the NPVR Recordings folder).

Everything works well at the moment but I am just wondering how Emby's Live TV option works in practice.

Would it be worth considering, given my set up?  What would be the advantage?

Moving to Kodi forum because I think those guys will be the ones with the best answers.

Emby for Kodi doesn't support live tv as you know. So your current setup is the only way to get it working at this time. I know marcelveldt is working something to support emby live tv, but it's nowhere ready yet.

If I understand it, marcelveldt is working on a Kodi PVR client (for Live TV and EPG).  Correct?  This, a HDHomeRun tuner, Emby (with HDHR tuner setup), and xmltv.xml EPG would be a WMC killer!  Right now, only get a four hour RPG and no recording functionality in Kodi.

Thanks for that.

I think I am still a little confused by the options available.

Am I correct in thinking that there are currently two ways to get Live TV into Emby - 1. via the Emby live TV plugin itself or 2. by using an Emby Plugin for a third party PVR software (TVH, NPVR, Mediaportal etc)?

No - Live TV in Kodi (using Emby or not) is not handled by the Emby for Kodi add-on as stated previously.  In order to use Live TV in Kodi you need to be using one of their supported backends or if you have a newer HDHomerun, you can use the HDHomerun PVR add-on from the Kodi repo to directly access the stream from the tuner (no backend software required).

Using the HDHomerun PVR add-on is about as simple as it gets.  Install add-on - configure TV settings - done.

Not speaking for @@marcelveldt here on the Live TV stuff being integrated into the Emby for Kodi add-on - but I can see why this has not gotten a lot of traction.  First - Kodi's PVR functionality is quite good - and if you just need it look at a guide to see what is currently on and start a stream it works great - doesn't get any simpler.

I can understand people wanting to have more EPG data and access to recording functionality.  However - in my opinion - I don't really set recordings from the Kodi interface anymore so it is redundant functionality for me.  Having more EPG data or access to the recording functions would be a LOT of work - and more importantly it would not be as tightly integrated into the Kodi interface as Kodi's own PVR tools are.  Kodi for me is a front end for playing back video - that's it.  For recordings, settings, etc I do all this via the Emby web client and it works great.  I cannot remember the last time I used a client device for that stuff.

If you are coming from WMC I can see how your experience would be different because you are forced to use the client software (WMC) for everything.
