I'm looking over the documentation for remote access: Is there any kind of authentication that is performed to prevent random clients from logging onto my library? Ideally, I'm hoping there would be an encrypted channel (https) for authentication. I don't really need to encrypt media traffic.

 

I just want to understand before I expose a public port on my firewall and router.

You can run over HTTPS but there is no method to do this just for the authentication and then switch back to regular HTTP.

 

Just enable passwords on the user accounts, add a certificate, and open up the HTTPS port externally.
