Fresh Install (stable) - issues/bugs

I just ran through the install of a clean version of Emby and i spotted a few things that must have passed me by the first time i installed emby

 

A few things need amending / correcting

 

1) Why is the installer trying to install  .net 4.6.2 on a Anniversary updated Win 10 Pro machine which has it by default? I checked and it is already installed.

2) The installer fails the first time i think because of the above

3) You have to run the install a second time to get Emby installed. Possibly i was unlucky?

4) The installer gives you no option/choice of where emby will be installed - why is this as 99.99% of other programs give you the choice if you want to install somewhere other than the default? Especially as Emby does not install itself in the "usual" place of Program Files - i know why you are doing this but the average Tom, Dick or Harriet does not. - A note perhaps instead of the confusing service note that could be on the dashboard instead - its too techy for the average person.

5) You cant get past this screen unless you put your SD username and password in - actually anything in the fields lets you past

6)The Android and Roku links do not work and need amending on this screen

7) when you get to the login screen - for consistency should it not be white like 99% of the rest of the dashboard by default - the user options is also a black background - only noticed this during the install as i ususally have a custom css of black

its a bit of a jarring contrast

 

The welcome slideshow on the dashboard needs a make over as Luke is aware plus the one in the home page as well

 

Other than that i went painlessly - lol

For install location there are dozens of topics on it, but it comes down to automatic updates not working properly anywhere else.

yes there are lots of topics but i was trying to do what the install guide said to do (with no brain ) to see what i would experience for an average user doing it for the first time who has not spent a log time here first

 

the WMC and KODi links brought up a page that i did not look at to closely but yes looks like they need changing to thanks for the additions

 

hmm auto installs not working - odd as the server checks - so know where its installed - so should be no problem - if it was an issue then the portable install would not update and it does as i have one setup on a different drive to my first install

I guess I could remove the windows service page. my concern has been that if we don't have that page in the wizard, most users will never know we have a windows service. and if they don't know we have a windows service, but they want a windows service, then they may wind up thinking this is a shortcoming of Emby Server.

1# don't you just love MS - had a suspicion it might be out of your control

 

As for the service page i would put it on the dashboard main page - say below the paths drop down - as it will be seen a lot more than just the once

 

or maybe the Settings page where you have the option for run server at start up so related or the Advanced page etc

If you are using the portable install it is assumed you know enough about your setup to figure out how to make auto updates work properly and, if not, well, you used a non-standard install so you assume the responsibility .

 

For a standard install, the only place we can 100% be sure we can provide seamless, transparent, unattended automatic update is within the user's folder.  Microsoft's own One-click install system uses the same area for the very same reason.  If it is anywhere else, we run into problems with permissions on at least 10% of installs.  Way back in the beginning, we used to spend hours of our support time trying to help people with these issues and, since moving this install location, it is a non-issue.

 

So, that is the full reason it is how it is.

lol - how can the portable be a non-standard install - its not a user hack

I did a fresh install at the weekend on my test server and it found the HDHomeRun tuners, but as they are in my main Emby server already, I just hit SKIP and the installation did.
