SynesthesiaBruh 1 Posted October 12, 2016 Posted October 12, 2016 (edited) So, I have a lot of full blu-ray and 4k content on my NAS that I would like to play with Emby without any sort of loss in video quality as I'm very compulsive. Basically whatever I'd be able to see by simply playing the file in VLC is what I would like to show up on my TV. However, I'm not sure if this is possible nor what Emby Server settings I'd need to apply. My Setup: Emby Server installed on NAS with Windows 10 installed. My Emby app is on an Xbox One and will probably be on an Xbox One S. My NAS is wired directly to a switch, which is wired directly to my router. My Xbox is wired directly into my router. I have some cheap 1080p Vizio TV right now, but eventually I'll be upgrading to an LG 60UH8500. So basically I'm assuming some sort of transcoding/compression/etc is taking place as otherwise 20-60GB of data will be clogging up my home network every hour per movie being [streamed?]. I would like to minimize or eliminate this if it's happening. Now I can't tell if it is yet, the picture quality looks perfectly fine for the content I've played so far, but I'm very compulsive. Here are my Server settings I think are relevant, but please let me know if there are any other screenshots you'd need. 99% of content I have is mkv files, the below screenshots are of 2 examples opened with mediaviewer: Edited October 12, 2016 by SynesthesiaBruh
Happy2Play 9780 Posted October 12, 2016 Posted October 12, 2016 It still comes down to whether the device you are playing media to/on supports the codecs then media is in. When you are playing media you can check the Dashboard and under Active Devices it will tell you how the media is being played. 1

Ok so my media will be played on my Xbox One (maybe One S) So I'm assuming that the TV I get will not need to support the codecs, as the file is actually being played on the Xbox One and that I'd only need to worry about which codecs my TV supports if I lets say get a Samsung TV and play my media from the new Samsung Emby app right? So as long as the Xbox supports the codec I'm good. Also, almost all my media is stored in MKV containers, and inside those containers tends to be H.264 video files but occasionally the codec will be VC-1 or something random. I'm assuming my Xbox will need to know how to both open an MKV container and be able to play the H.264 codec, or does it not really matter which container I use? Happy2Play 9780 Posted October 12, 2016 Posted October 12, 2016 Yes if the device supports the codecs, you will not have any issues. Even if in a unsupported container the server will remux supported codecs into a supported container. Most of your issues will come from supported audio codec (DTS, DTS-HD MA) and sometimes subtitles. Every device has different capabilities so you would need to address any issues in the appropriate app section. Xbox One app would be Emby Theater Samsung depending on model here
Deathsquirrel 745 Posted October 12, 2016 Posted October 12, 2016 The xbox one will not be playing back full bluray rips with zero transcoding. It will at least be altering the audio in most cases as it won't pass through hd sound formats used on bluray.
