acnp77 67 Posted October 10, 2016 Posted October 10, 2016 (edited) ok, but then this would not just happen to some files, but to all files within a directory... I was not able to find out what the issue is... it would be great to direct access the files over dlna. any hints welcome... Example: I tried DLNA with kodi: If I start the movie XY from the webinterface (ipad client) and send it to kodi client it plays direct stream (all profiles setup and matched). But if I start the same movie XY directly from kodi it transcodes (same profile used). This proves that MB transcodes when not needed. Maybe with the apps the recognition is better, but I do not use the mb-apps. But yes, you are right- the "force direct play" is only needed if the client/network capabilities are not recognized coerrectly. So maybe not that important as I thought. I am happy with my kodi-clients and the webinterface... Edited October 10, 2016 by Happy2Play
Luke 42077 Posted October 10, 2016 Posted October 10, 2016 Can you first describe your problem in a little more detail? Thanks.

Angelblue05 4132 Posted October 10, 2016 Posted October 10, 2016 (edited) Doesn't have to do with the playback mode selected, you can achieve direct play with both mode.Things that will force transcode in Kodi: if you set the video quality lower than the required bitrate for the content you are trying to play, while using play from HTTP. Otherwise it will direct play, without modifying the file. We also have those optional format like hevc, h265 which can be force to transcode via the add-on settings. This is not a server decision, but a client one.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Edited October 10, 2016 by Angelblue05 2

acnp77 67 Posted October 10, 2016 Author Posted October 10, 2016 (edited) @@Luke @@Happy2Play I wil try to descirbe the problem and also provide some info about the lib path setup... - I tried to use MB-Server and kodi clients with DLNA and no transcoding in my LAN (No kodi-emby-addon), as this is the setup that suits my need the best. - I setup a movies-type library in mb to test. - I allowed kodi to be controlled by upnp. - I created the dlna-profile in mb-server called "kodi" from scratch. I have added "all" to the direct-play profile. - I navigate the server using the webinterface (on my pc or on my ipad or whatever...), connect to the "kodi-dlna-player" and start a movie. -> The movie plays "direct play" -> OK - Then I go to my kodi client, add the upnp src from mb and navigate to the same movie. When I start the movie from there, it transcodes. -> WHY? (according to log the same "kodi"-proflie was used) This does not happen to all movies, but just to some of them... which makes it even harder to understand. Lib setup: Media is on smb-fileserver like: \\10.0.0.101\movies On mb-server the shares are mounted to the underlaying os (debian) with "mount -t cifs ..." like /mnt/media/movies In "path substitution" I have got: /mnt/media/ TO \\10.0.0.101\ I assume that the paths are correct, because I can use direct play very well with the kodi-addon in native-mode, and also I can see the correct path in my dlna-client. But also might be wrong... Anything strange about my paths? Edited October 10, 2016 by acnp77
CBers 7450 Posted October 10, 2016 Posted October 10, 2016 thanks guys... but we are not talking about the addon. No problems there I am talking about DLNA -Streaming... Thanks! A stupid question, but if you have the addon installed, and it is working OK by the sound of it, why are you using DLNA? Also, you're saying the DLNA to Kodi is Direct Playing, but from within Kodi, it transcodes? That's different to what you stated earlier.
acnp77 67 Posted October 10, 2016 Author Posted October 10, 2016 no question is stupid I started out trying dlna because it did not know the addon. Then I run into above described problems with dlna. Angelblue05 then posted some info about the addon (thanks again!) and now I use it and it is great. But the dlna problem just interessts me, and I would like to find out more about it... and I wanted to compare the two solutions in terms of perfermance on my rather slow client. Cheers

I am not exactly sure what you mean but I tried to describe the problem in post #7... hope this helps
CBers 7450 Posted October 10, 2016 Posted October 10, 2016 I thought in an earlier post that you said: the only way to get reliable "direct play" is to use the kodi/emby-addon in native mode. But you also said thst it transcodes from within Kodi with the addon: Example: I tried DLNA with kodi: If I start the movie XY from the webinterface (ipad client) and send it to kodi client it plays direct stream (all profiles setup and matched). But if I start the same movie XY directly from kodi it transcodes (same profile used). I'm just confused, that's all
acnp77 67 Posted October 10, 2016 Author Posted October 10, 2016 The second quote in your last post is not about the addon, it's just about DLNA. Two totally different things. The addon in native mode never transcodes and works very well. (If I anywhere stated that it transcodes from within Kodi with the addon I do apologize, but I dont think I have) Cheers
CBers 7450 Posted October 10, 2016 Posted October 10, 2016 if I start the same movie XY directly from kodi it transcodes (same profile used).
acnp77 67 Posted October 10, 2016 Author Posted October 10, 2016 (edited) if I start the same movie XY directly from kodi it transcodes (same profile used). it does not say anything about the addon anywhere does it??? and second- you cut off the beginning: "I tried DLNA with kodi: if I start..." I clearly stated it's about DLNA, not addon. sorry - cheers mate- but I think this discussion does not make any sense... to clear things up... the issue is stated in post #7 Its about DLNA Edited October 10, 2016 by acnp77
Happy2Play 9780 Posted October 10, 2016 Posted October 10, 2016 Can you restart the server to create a new server log and us Play to play something and then use Kodi via DLNA and play something that gets transcodes, then post the server and transcode logs.
Luke 42077 Posted October 10, 2016 Posted October 10, 2016 Try deleting your custom kodi dlna profile. We already have one that is designed to direct play everything.
CBers 7450 Posted October 10, 2016 Posted October 10, 2016 it does not say anything about the addon anywhere does it??? OK, so it's Kodi WITHOUT the addon where it's transcoding. Got it! And it's a DLNA issue. Got it! I'll shut up now 2
acnp77 67 Posted October 10, 2016 Author Posted October 10, 2016 @@CBers All good - Cheers @Happy2Play: I will get the logs together and post them asap... thx. I did a quick check and did not find an item that transcodes, but found an item that does not play at all with dlna. (when accessed directly from kodi and also when "played to dlna client" from mb webinterface.) LOG: "WARNING: could not find codec parameters for ..." and "ERROR: OpenDemuxStream - Error creating demuxer" With the kodi-addon in native mode also also over "bare" smb, it plays perfectly. @@Luke I tested the above described example with my custom profile, and then deleted the profle and tested without. Same same. I will try to post some log-entries that are a bit more complete. Cheers
acnp77 67 Posted October 11, 2016 Author Posted October 11, 2016 tried to get an example of the problem, and log files... But I now can not even get to the content. When I add upnp-src within kodi I get the mb-dlna-server-entry twice. After opening I get only the "movies" lib. My "tv","homevid" and "music"-type libs do not show at all. No change after restarting server and client. DLNA still has too many issues, does not work for me at the moment. Maybe in the future? I thought DLNA would be great to access the "homvevid" library. (Because it is not synced to addon and the addon still takes a long time to load the list)
Angelblue05 4132 Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 We will review plugin listing at some point. It is pretty slow on low powered device. If that's ok, I'll let you know once I have something for you to test. There's no set timeframe, but it should be sooner rather than later. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Luke 42077 Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 We would have to look at a specific example using the information requested here: https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/739-how-to-report-a-problem/ I am unclear if you are referring to dlna playback or the emby for kodi add-on, so that's what a specific example can help illuminate, among other things. as for library visibility, head over to dlna settings on the server and make sure it is configured to show the user library that you want.
