My brother is looking at getting something he can stream through as he has a Sony tv. What, in your opinion, is the best device for him to use to access my server and stream content?

I use Roku devices on my televisions. The interface is a little dated but dead simple to use. It also has the best selection of content across providers. I think the only thing it doesn't support is iTunes.

He tried the Xbox one but said he couldn't use the web as it kept glitching and wasn't willing to pay the subscription for the app, which is fair enough. Why isn't the xbone app a one off fee like the iOS version?

If it is a new Sony with Android TV as the OS, then he has access to our app in the Play Store.

If not, there are a ton of options.  Which one is best will depend on his exact requirements.

I believe the tv is about the same age as mine and as such not on android.

He just wants simple and easy streaming of my media, was looking at the chromecast as iPhones won't AirPlay to Sony tv's

I would recommend the Roku again. No fee to use it. I would also look at the blue neon theme for Emby by @@speechles. As it has a lot more features and options then the one by the Emby team at this time.
