Local streaming traffic being reported as external to ISP?

So for some reason my monthly data allotment keeps getting eaten up by all the local streaming bandwidth that is going through my router. Any idea why this is happening? Any one have any tips or suggestions? really appreciate any help!

How are you connecting?

My computer is set up as the server hard wired directly in to one of my router's LAN ports. Two devices connect to the server also through Lan ports. The rest of my devices connect to the home WiFi network. I don't see why the traffic has any cause to go outside the network. I have port forwarding configured to a separate ip for remote access. My local ip is completely different from my remote ip to access the server.

Are you connection via Emby Connect or manually to local ip?  What clients are you using?

i have been using emby connect. Is that it? i didnt realize that would take it out of network

No, Emby Connect will not necessarily do that. It always attempts to use the local address first. I'm afraid unless we can review the history of a specific example we can't really be sure what happened or not. What I would try to do is try to get it to happen again and then we can review the logs.

If I can jump in, I had what I thought was a similar issue months back.  Here is what I found, and what I did to test it:

First - Turn off or disconnect your modem from the router.  The internal network should continue to function, and if the players can still access and play your media, then it is not going outside the network.  If the server is not available, check the settings on the players.

Second - If this is a fairly new installation of Emby, be patient.  It is doing a great deal of "fetching" information from the Internet.  After a few days to a few weeks of gathering all of the information, the Internet usage should drop.

Hopefully Netflix will be successful in getting the data caps removed from all of our providers, and this will not be an issue.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestions Scott. This particular instance of my emby server is not really new, probably 6 months old. It did grab a ton of data from the internet but i turned on all these fetching settings one at a time so that my network was not overloaded, but that was a few months ago. I will try to duplicate this issue by disabling the cable connection going to the ISP.
