What OS does it run, Marshmallow or Nougat?

About 2:40 in he says Android 6.0.

These reviews bother me.  No one is using these things to play games, they are all being used to play content.  Show us the freaking content playback and none of that gaming crap.

I wish redskull or cnx-software would review this, then we would get some indepth review on what we want to know.

Too bad my only American Walmart is a 4-5 hour drive away and I can't drive that far till maybe January due to medical reasons.

The silly thing has a full-sized USB port on it :).  I guess that makes it really convenient for a flash drive but its made it nearly impossible for me to hook it to my computer for debugging output.  Who's heard of a USB A-A cable in the last 10 years?

Amazon, here I come...

Yeah, my sister bought one of those cables to try to fix a Leelbox that was dead-on-arrival (it worked, until it died again). They exist but they're not something you can get just anywhere. None of these Android TV devices have a type B because they're generally not meant to plug into a computer.

Type C is what I would have expected.  That's what all the others have.

However, it is actually smart on their part for them to make it Type A since that means someone can just directly plug-in a thumb drive - the primary use for this port.  It is just very inconvenient for my use.

Anyone have tests of the various DTS formats.  The people on /r/androidtv are saying it doesn't work in plex very well.  Since we all use Emby, I am hoping that our ability to use external players gives us a serious advantage, and will possibly bring some converts.

I am unable to bitstream DTS on this device from our app.  If I enable the option, the video doesn't play at all.  There are, unfortunately, no errors in the log.

@@MSattler a lot of your video complains about the home screen. You should try out TVlauncher from the Play Store. I like it much better then what I saw in your video and Leelbox's default. My boxes literally only have two buttons on the home screen: Emby and Firefox.

Amlogic S905 chips unfortunately only support USB 2.0. USB 3.0, nevermind 3.1, is beyond them. Edited by FordGT90Concept

Usb type-c is still charging big royalties for adoption. It has full size usb to avoid the need for using usb-otg cables. The bootloader I assume isnt locked, so rooting it should be straight forward. Are there system images available for the device in case you need to reflash it back to stock? Does it only release OTA updates? Does it have fastboot?

So once I disabled the customizer the Mi Box Recommends list went away.  Makes it look nice and simple.

Anyone else have the issue that if you disable The customizer that netflix isn't on the homescreen anymore?

Posted

Unfortunately, it didn't remove the Netflix icon for me... I did open Netflix and signed-up first before disabling the LeanBackCustomizer app, though... in case this has any effect with it.

Is it simply the icon or the whole app that is gone/uninstalled?

I bought two of these little things. I found that it will start a DTS movie with receiver showing DTS but the screen will freeze within 10 seconds, but the sound continues to play. It's early days but I will not need DTS for the TV's that I'm planning to connect them to. I will do more testing in the next week but it plays everything fine with downmix to stereo option.

How does it perform if you use SPMC or Archos as an external player with DTS/passthrough?  You need to be on the beta team to see this option.

So far, I really like this box as a replacement for Roku stick I gave my family 1.5 years ago.

One annoying issue I found was that the "Restricted Profile" will keep the Mi Recomends bar...even if you disabled the addon and notifications (and is gone from the owner profile)

Other than that, works great!

PS - Don't need any native DTS or HD audio...so that is not tested.

I will test this later on this week and report back.

Test done so far.

Installed Purex 4-port USB 3 hub - Works

Added Unitek USB 3 Gigabit Ethernet Adaptor - Works

Wireless keyboard and mouse - Works

Tested DTS playback:

Emby for Android TV - Starts playing A/V but Video stops about 10 seconds in when the option is set to pass-thru HD tracks. From there video stutters and is out of sync.

Emby for Android TV - Use external player VLC - Plays but only in stereo

Emby for Android TV - Use external player MX Player - Plays but only in stereo

Emby for Android TV - Use external player Kodi - Plays DTS, AC3 but not DTS-MA (I was hopping that DTS-MA would pass-thru). When you hit stop you are dropped to the Kodi main menu and upon exit you are back to the main Android TV menu. so not a clean use for an external player. My guess is that the best option would be to use Kodi with the Emby plugin if you want the option to use DTS. Stereo playback is fine for the TV's that I will be connecting these to.

Emby for Android TV - Use external player SPMC - Same as Kodi but when you exit SPMC you are back to Emby and not the Android TV menu.

Emby for Android TV - Use external player Archos - Did not test because there is no free version to test.

Just FYI - if you turn off the option to bitstream DTS it should play back and decode to 5.1 PCM.  Sound quality and/or volume at least may not be the same but you do get full 5.1 sound.

In the Emby app or on the player itself?

FYI - Archos functions just like SPMC. I might end up using one of the external players as Emby gives you no indication that you have FF/RW a video, external players will show on the screen that you have jumped ahead 30 seconds or whatever... Emby just jumps and displays nothing on the screen. I think that I will put in for a feature request on that note.

I've used S905/X for a while longer now and I've now reached the conclusion it is inadequate for MPEG2 direct play. It's really, really, really close but close doesn't cut it. Watching live TV especially, it will occasionally pause a few seconds and then resume on its own. It happens often enough that it is bothersome.

I'm looking at alternatives but the price looks to be NVIDIA Shield-like at minimum. It's cheaper/easier to change my HD HomeRun CONNECTs to HD HomeRun EXTENDs.
