horstepipe 422 Posted September 19, 2016 Posted September 19, 2016 Hey is a device out there which can play all audio/video formats (especially DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD) which costs about 100-200$? There has to be an Emby app for it, no Kodi please. Regards
horstepipe 422 Posted September 19, 2016 Author Posted September 19, 2016 Nvidia Shield Do you own a Shield and using it with Emby and can tell me something about the overall experience and performance? Is everything smooth?
horstepipe 422 Posted September 19, 2016 Author Posted September 19, 2016 is there another device which has no gaming features but anything else instead?
Jdiesel 1431 Posted September 19, 2016 Posted September 19, 2016 I don't own one but lots do (hopefully someone can answer your questions) but from what I've heard the Shield is pretty much the go to android device for both Emby and Kodi. I personally use a RPI2 running LibreElec, a Intel NUC running LibreElec, and a HTPC running Emby Theater. All work great and play everything smoothly. 1
Jdiesel 1431 Posted September 19, 2016 Posted September 19, 2016 I would advise against getting a cheap Chinese android box if you value features like refreshrate switching and HD audio passthrough. I think the Amazon Fire TVs are another popular choice or if you can wait the new Xiaomi TV might be a more affordable option that runs a true version of Android TV.

I'm sure that others will agree that the Shield is well worth the money even if you don't plan to use it for gaming. As far a market share goes the Shield has the majority of it meaning there is more hardware in the wild and more developers using it to develop on. This means it just tends to work. On a side note there are rumors of a new Nvidia Shield about to be released, no word on if it is a major or minor refresh at this point though. 1

Regards If full playback of HD audio is your true requirement and you don't want to use Kodi or another external player, then re-purpose an old PC and use the Emby Theater desktop app. A Shield and our app will get you a very nice experience but not the HD Audio currently (unless you use an external player). 1

So there is no Emby App that allows HD audio pass through at the moment? Is that because of licensing?
bluemonkey07 590 Posted September 19, 2016 Posted September 19, 2016 (edited) Yes there is it's called kodi Or more specifically for Android it's SPMC the Android fork of kodi And for windows emby Theater AFAIK you don't need a licence to pass through, you need a licence to decode Edited September 19, 2016 by Vidman
Luke 42079 Posted September 19, 2016 Posted September 19, 2016 Emby for Android TV. Emby theater. Emby for wmc. 1

bluemonkey07 590 Posted September 19, 2016 Posted September 19, 2016 (edited) Librelec is kodi So just install the emby for kodi add-on and you're all set Edited September 19, 2016 by Vidman
Jdiesel 1431 Posted September 19, 2016 Posted September 19, 2016 How do you get Emby app on Raspberry Pi? There is no native RPi app yet but the Emby for Kodi Plugin works great on the RPi.
horstepipe 422 Posted September 20, 2016 Author Posted September 20, 2016 (edited) Yeah I love Emby for Kodi, too. But I'm looking for a user and friend who is absolutely ungifted regarding technique. So I guess the "real" Emby app is more safe because with Emby for Kodi sometimes I have to do something to make it work again after update or so. Regarding HD audio: My Server is quite weak so I want to load it as less as possible. Some of my movies only have HD audio so with the shield they had to be remuxed. horstepipe 422 Posted September 20, 2016 Author Posted September 20, 2016 Emby for Android TV. Emby theater. Emby for wmc. That's confusing, I thought the Shield's OS is Android TV...?
ebr 16184 Posted September 20, 2016 Posted September 20, 2016 Are you sure about that? I just tested a DTS-HD item and it came through as straight DTS (I think - I have a new receiver and I'm not sure how it indicates DTS-HD). For TrueHD, it probably requires the current beta. Again, it will probably pass the DD core. 1
ebr 16184 Posted September 20, 2016 Posted September 20, 2016 That's confusing, I thought the Shield's OS is Android TV...? Yes, sorry, that is a bit confusing. It would be possible with our Android TV app using the new external player feature (only available in beta right now).
speechles 2055 Posted September 20, 2016 Posted September 20, 2016 For TrueHD, it probably requires the current beta. Again, it will probably pass the DD core. You mean truehd has to be downsampled to ac3 5.1. There is no core audio within truehd. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
