Hey

is a device out there which can play all audio/video formats (especially DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD) which costs about 100-200$?

There has to be an Emby app for it, no Kodi please.

Nvidia Shield

Do you own a Shield and using it with Emby and can tell me something about the overall experience and performance? Is everything smooth?

is there another device which has no gaming features but anything else instead?

I don't own one but lots do (hopefully someone can answer your questions) but from what I've heard the Shield is pretty much the go to android device for both Emby and Kodi.

I personally use a RPI2 running LibreElec, a Intel NUC running LibreElec, and a HTPC running Emby Theater. All work great and play everything smoothly.

I would advise against getting a cheap Chinese android box if you value features like refreshrate switching and HD audio passthrough. I think the Amazon Fire TVs are another popular choice or if you can wait the new Xiaomi TV might be a more affordable option that runs a true version of Android TV.

don't want to have a cheap Chinese box :D

Just thought if the box will never be used for gaming, maybe there is another box with the same price but more power/other features on which you can't play.

I'm sure that others will agree that the Shield is well worth the money even if you don't plan to use it for gaming. As far a market share goes the Shield has the majority of it meaning there is more hardware in the wild and more developers using it to develop on. This means it just tends to work. On a side note there are rumors of a new Nvidia Shield about to be released, no word on if it is a major or minor refresh at this point though.

If full playback of HD audio is your true requirement and you don't want to use Kodi or another external player, then re-purpose an old PC and use the Emby Theater desktop app.

A Shield and our app will get you a very nice experience but not the HD Audio currently (unless you use an external player).

So there is no Emby App that allows HD audio pass through at the moment? Is that because of licensing?

Yes there is it's called kodi

Or more specifically for Android it's SPMC the Android fork of kodi

And for windows emby Theater

AFAIK you don't need a licence to pass through, you need a licence to decode

How do you get Emby app on Raspberry Pi?

Librelec is kodi

So just install the emby for kodi add-on and you're all set

There is no native RPi app yet but the Emby for Kodi Plugin works great on the RPi.

Yeah I love Emby for Kodi, too. But I'm looking for a user and friend who is absolutely ungifted regarding technique. So I guess the "real" Emby app is more safe because with Emby for Kodi sometimes I have to do something to make it work again after update or so.

Regarding HD audio: My Server is quite weak so I want to load it as less as possible. Some of my movies only have HD audio so with the shield they had to be remuxed.

I don't think that should be the case.  The HD codecs contain a core that should pass through.

Are you sure about that?

That's confusing, I thought the Shield's OS is Android TV...?

I just tested a DTS-HD item and it came through as straight DTS (I think - I have a new receiver and I'm not sure how it indicates DTS-HD).

For TrueHD, it probably requires the current beta.  Again, it will probably pass the DD core.

Yes, sorry, that is a bit confusing.  It would be possible with our Android TV app using the new external player feature (only available in beta right now).

You mean truehd has to be downsampled to ac3 5.1. There is no core audio within truehd.

Thank you

So you're getting no ffmpeg process on Emby server?

And this feature will be available for Shield, too?
