Playback Mode and/or "Play from HTTP instead of SMB"

Hi,

In Kodi plugin under "Sync Options" there is:

  • Playback Mode: Addon (Default) or Native (Direct Paths)

Under "Playback", there is:

  • Play from HTTP instead of SMB (on/off)

I understand that the combination of "Addon (default)" + "Play from HTTP instead of SMB (off)" allows Emby/Kodi to direct play (using smb:// paths). That however of course breaks the ability to access media from external networks.

Combination of  "Addon (default)" + "Play from HTTP instead of SMB (on)" never allows the possibility of direct play (not even in the home LAN), but always at least direct streams. On the other hand, one can access media from outside home LAN (even music through SSL as in my other post).

One can also set a combination of "Native (Direct Paths)" + "Play from HTTP instead of SMB (on)". That should not be possible, right?

I think you are missing the point of what playback mode means. With native playback mode, most settings under playback have no effects because the addon doesn't control playback. Please check our wiki: https://github.com/MediaBrowser/plugin.video.emby/wiki/Emby-for-kodi-settings

I will reply to your other thread a bit later but the music library does not work the same as the video library. It's impossible to change path to music on the fly.

Are you asking for a toggle to switch between Direct play and external access?

Yes. I'm not native English speaker, so that wording at least would be more descriptive of the functionality (from the end user perspective).

I'm also slowly now beginning to understand, that the options under "playback" do not have much to do with music. Renaming the tab to "video playback" maybe?

Anyway, first of all, these are just my experiences, second of  all: I'd rather not steal your precious time from developing the awsome plugin by discussing the settings user interface :-)

Your work is highly appreciated!

Sounds good. Thanks for the suggestion. Edited by Angelblue05
