I am looking for something to run Emby Server on.

I am thinking of replacing my old Javelin server with a QNAP or Synology and running it on that. Or, just getting an Intel NUC and running Emby Server on that with Theater.

What do you guys think is the best way? And, what type of NUC do you recommend?

I use a Windows 10 PC with an Intel Core i7-4790K 4.4 GHz  - 16GB RAM - 650w psu - Mid Tower case with 8 HDD bays allowing me 32TB total using 4TB HDDs..

It rocks!!

Emby server has been flawless on my PC, Plex also. I Run the Emby client on my Nvidia Shield Pro.

I know its overkill for my personal needs, but i don't like running anything that has to work hard using the majority of its performance abilities pushing itself to keep up.

It's all about bandwidth. Network bandwidth and transcoding bandwidth. You need to figure out how much you're going to need as time goes on. What you need now, maybe not what you need in a year. HTPCs do give you move configurable options. Hardware decoding is becoming more and more necessary. H265 is becoming more prevalent, and takes a bit of juice to decode. Figure out your requirements before you decide on your hardware.

I use an Intel NUC - Skull Canyon - NUC6i7KYK with 32GB ram and a couple of Smasung M.2 drives for Emby with a QNAP 853A as the data store via 1gig network

Works great with my Sony 4k TV (hung on the back)

Its a bit over kill at the moment but has Intel Quicksync so hopefully will work well with hardware transcoding as it matures over the next couple of years

As Doofus said decide how many users you are going to cater for and what features of emby you are wanting to use and might in the future

Remember a NAS is designed to be a low power server of files as its primary purpose - media server (with transcoding) is possible but usually the majority struggle to do transcoding on the fly and give a poor user experince - unless you go very high end with models including an Intel desktop cpu - be careful of the PR hype. My 853a can stream files fine - trancoding on the fly is just about possible from SD to HD for one user.

Have fun choosing your new hardware :)

Get a Dell T20 w/ the E3 1225 CPU, pick up another 16GB ECC RAM, install your favorite Linux flavor, and you've got a beast for around $400.
