RedBaron164 18 Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 I'm looking into upgrading my old Roku 1's and 2's with a Roku 3 or 4 and possible some of the Model 3600 Sticks. I'm wondering if any of those newer models can handle direct streaming of mkv's (x264 and x265). My collection of x265 files is increasing and I'd like to get a Roku that can handle the files without needing to transcode everything.
RedBaron164 18 Posted September 15, 2016 Author Posted September 15, 2016 Ok excellent, one other question, if they can handle mkv's direct streaming, I'm assuming that either the Model 3600 stick or the Roku 3 could then handle Live TV without transcoding as well. Is that correct? This would finally be the excuse I need to upgrade the Roku's :-) It's annoying when one transcode stream maxes out the CPU so I can only use one Roku at a time.
speechles 2055 Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 (edited) Wait to upgrade the roku.. They are dropping the numbers from the models. There will be x265, 10bit, and 4k added these new models. The only recent model that suports x265 is the roku4. http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Roku-Filing-Suggests-Multiple-New-4K-Roku-Boxes-Incoming-137746 http://www.slashgear.com/roku-tipped-with-5-new-models-inbound-hdr-4k-and-more-29453775/ Read all about it. The old roku models are being phased out. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk Edited September 15, 2016 by speechles 2
RedBaron164 18 Posted September 15, 2016 Author Posted September 15, 2016 (edited) I've heard that, I'm hoping the new models come out sometime in November. Then I can upgrade sometime around Christmas. Do you know if the Roku 4 supports 10bit? 4k isn't currently important to me, but support for 10bit x265 file is something I'm very interested in. But I was curious about the Roku 3/3600 stick because if they can handle even x264 files and live tv without transcoding then if they go on sale in the next few months for cheap I can pick up one or two to replace a couple of my Roku's then I can wait for the new ones to replace the main Roku that I actually watch movies. speechles 2055 Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 The roku4 does support 10bit x265 up to 60fps. The 2016 roku streaming stick is quad core like the roku 3. It lacks ethernet, usb, and sd card. It can play anything the roku3 can. This includes 1080p x264 up to 60fps. It cannot direct play mpeg2 streams which some liveTV devices provide. RedBaron164 18 Posted September 15, 2016 Author Posted September 15, 2016 Thanks, that's very helpful. I'll definitely wait for the new models. Hopefully the new stick can handle x265 and mpeg2 streams.
farside847 39 Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 it would be great if the new units supported more formats, but to my knowledge none of the previously released rokus supported mpeg2, so I am doubtful
