Hi,

I'm trying to buy parts for a new HTPC, I'am not going to build it myself  but have the store do it for me. I asked for parts that could play the latest games and most of all, handle extreme good movie quality, 4k. This is what the store recommended to me. My budget is 2k. Whats your opinion?

Why using a PC? A Android TV Device can handle 4k easily with HDMI 2.x and HDR Support. (For example the Nvidia Shield Android TV)

Saves you a lot of money.

If you want to play games, you really need as much as power you can get. (depending on the games you want to play)

For me, I dont want any of these machines in my living room cause they are often loud and not that smart as a small Android device.I use GameStream for streaming Games from my PC, which is in my office room, to my shield in the living room. working fine for me.

With the Emby ATV app, or Kodi, with the Emby for Kodi addon installed, the Shield TV is a winner !!

Alternate opinion from someone who did what OP is trying to do:

I've got a combo game rig / HTPC in the living room.  It's plenty quiet during video playback (seriously quiet).  I put it together with large fans that turn slow.

This way the box with the GPU can do double duty with gaming and with madVR for video playback.  Yes, madVR definitely can improve image quality, and it's worth having the GPU power to use it (especially if you're wanting to also use it for games).  Though in order to remain quiet, you want a GPU with a quiet cooler, and you want to make sure you're not driving it too hard with madVR (plenty of performance headroom).

I'm using EventGhost to control switching between Kodi, Emby Theater, Steam Big Picture, and Spotify via remote.  I couldn't be happier with the results although it took a bit of time to get it all working smoothly.

@@Ryssen86 - a couple things in the build that I might question:

  • For the SSD - why use the 750 series instead of the 850?  Also, 250gig might be a little small depending on the number and type of games you would have installed at the same time
  • Since you're saying you're doing 4k - you might want to stretch the budget a bit more and go with the 1070
  • You also might want to check with them to see what fans and CPU cooler they would use to see how quiet it might end up being.

How would your optimal HTPC look like with a 2k budget?

It would look like a waste of money :)

Sounds like you want a big screen gaming PC that can double as an HTPC - the main thing for that is to make sure to get big, controllable fans so you can have it quiet when in movie mode.

Don't forget the 140mm fans with customizable led colors.

That case only supports micro ATX. I say go big. I have an NZXT 630. Lots of room, and has sound deadening panels. I posted details here

I have a gaming rig in my office with a GTX 970 Nvidia Card plugged to a Samsung 4k UHD Monitor and in my livingroom a Nvidia Shield device. Because of my monitor is only capable of showing 60 Hz content, 50 Fps media is not as fluid. But this is a display issue not a problem caused by the player.

Talking about picture quality I cant see a real difference. The only thing I noticed: It is hard to get good h265 decoder for windows, which are HW based. Even with HW acceleration I have a high CPU load which results in a louder fan. Dont know the reason why, but haven't investigated much time in resolving this.

The shield keeps quiet regardless which media I play. The only issue atm with the shield is, that the hardware deinterlacer got broken with the 3.2 update on some resulutions. So if you plan to watch interlaced content, you should wait for the update to fix it. (it is announced by nvidia).
