ddywz 2 Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 Was trying to test today e-mail notification testing. I went on web interface of the server direct and under admin section - "Manage server" then under Extras went to Notifications and under services picked the user I have configured the e-mail services for and clicked on test notification. I do get the e-mail notification but the circle changing colors keep turning around on the web interface and never returns and does not give a good feeling that this command is executed. I have to get out of there to bypass the spinning circle. Also the password field for SMTP password appears to be blank. I did put a password here and after I revisit the same view the password (well, some asterisks at least) is no longer there. Is it supposed to be like this for security reasons? Is this a bug? I updated to today to latest 3.0.7100.0 but the issue is still there, the test notification option does not return with an answer and the circle keeps spinning. Thanks,
Luke 42080 Posted September 11, 2016 Posted September 11, 2016 Hi, welcome. Yes the password is by design. Can you please provide the emby server log from the time of the send attempt? Instructions are here: http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/739-how-to-report-a-problem/ Thanks.
ddywz 2 Posted October 2, 2016 Author Posted October 2, 2016 Ok, I just tested this again after updated the server to latest version 3.0.7300.0 and the issue is still there. Other thing I'm noticing with notification is: I have 4 users including the default emby. When I uncheck the box for "enable notification for this user" and click on Save button I switch to another user and when I switch back to the user I disabled notification the check box appears checked again. So this feature is not working for me. I also tried to test notification for a user that services are set and is not working... Here is part of the log after I did so: 2016-10-02 14:18:01.2588 Info HttpServer: HTTP GET http://usmaster:8096/emby/Plugins/b9f0c474-e9a8-4292-ae41-eb3c1542f4cd/Configuration. I was thinking to get the premiere but I'd like these features to work first. Any help is appreciated, Any help is appreciated,
Luke 42080 Posted October 2, 2016 Posted October 2, 2016 The checkbox was just a cosmetic issue on the configuration page. I have pushed an update to the plugin to correct that. Please try it out and let us know how it goes, thanks. Also, please keep in mind that although we built the core notification system, the various notification plugins were built by community members. We work extremely hard on Emby, and we hope that the work of community members will not be your deciding factor about whether or not to support us with Emby Premiere. Thanks and enjoy.
ddywz 2 Posted October 2, 2016 Author Posted October 2, 2016 Thanks Luke for the quick reply. I did notice that there was an update for e-mail plugin just now and updated that and restarted the emby server. Now the behavior is changed. Testing notification still did not generate an e-mail to my inbox. I tried to put back the SMTP password for outgoing mail and then it worked. Well, I got the e-mail but the server seem to crash. I see the multicolor circle spinning after I click on "Test notification" and if I switch to dashboard I see only the option to shutdown the server. I had to manually do a "sudo service emby-server stop" and "sudo service emby-server start" to fix things back. Not sure why sending a test notification would crash the server. This still remains an issue,
Luke 42080 Posted October 2, 2016 Posted October 2, 2016 Can you please attach the complete server log, thanks.
ddywz 2 Posted October 3, 2016 Author Posted October 3, 2016 Attached is the server log. I only have replaced IP addresses and hostnames with words... server_log.txt
Luke 42080 Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 Well there are no errors in the log so i pushed another update to add logging when sending a test email. Again it's a logging-only update.
Luke 42080 Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 The fact that the receiving server is not throwing an error suggests that it is receiving it but not delivering it to the inbox.
ddywz 2 Posted October 3, 2016 Author Posted October 3, 2016 I did get the new update, Thanks for that. The situation is the same. I got the first test and 2nd test. Then I downloaded some new content. I do see the pop-up on bottom right corner on my laptop that new content detected, but I do not get notified for that. I did a manual scan of the whole library and still no e-mail. At that point went back to notification and do a 3rd test. After doing so this is what I get. Have attached screenshots. Cannot even get to logs....
Luke 42080 Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 I've pushed one more update to add a logging message everytime a message is sent. That will at least allow you to verify that it is outgoing. I would avoid using gmail, as we've seen many reported cases here where it assumes the email are spam and swallows them without delivering. If the email server you are using might be doing that, then that would also explain it.
ddywz 2 Posted October 3, 2016 Author Posted October 3, 2016 Mmmm, but I do get the test notification, is just when the content is updated I get nothing... Not sure why gmail will be the problem in this case. Also the 2nd user that uses a different inbox did not get notified either. Regardless which provider is used the GUI should not crash, that's my opinion. I will try with other e-mail providers and see how it goes. Thanks for the quick replies. I appreciate that.
Luke 42080 Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 I will notify the community contributor about the gui issue. Again this was a community contribution, sending emails is really not the core focus of Emby Server, and if it's giving you a negative impression of Emby then we may just have to pull it from the catalog. Thanks.
ddywz 2 Posted October 3, 2016 Author Posted October 3, 2016 No, Luke, the product is great. If it wasn't I would not have wasted my time into testing and comparing with other ones. It looks great and very promising. I do thank you guys for the hard work and did get the premiere key today. I just hate that little things like this linger and/or cause problem. I will try another provider and see how it goes, Thanks again,

Do you get e-mail notification when content is updated? say a new show or movie is detected? I'm assuming you have configured to notify when new content is added. I have no problem receiving test notifications, I just don't receive e-mail when content is changed. Looks like you're running it from a windows server so that environment may be different.

I use it for Emby updates, plugin updates and things like that.
