What happened to Please and Thanks?

Recommended Posts

Sorry, but I have to say this as it's starting to p**s me off. I was about to add this to another thread earlier tonight but I paused then deleted it so it didn't reflect on the Devs that had already responded and were trying to help.

So, I wonder what happened to please and thanks and the all the other nice things you can say when asking for help with a piece of software (free software in most cases)?

Luke and his troops didn't make MB3 different from MB2 just to annoy people, they changed because it offers so much more.

I know your average user maybe doesn't want the extra bells and whistles that MB3 offers but it just couldn't stay as it was. Yet the amount of users saying,

"it takes me 2 more button presses to do this and that"

Wow just wow. Now if it was just that then fair enough but the sentence above is quite often surrounded by multiple exclamation marks or question marks, doesn't even start with Hi or Hello and very little sign of any manners at all.

Then there's

"why doesn't it support my structure that I haven't really used with any other media software before... what's that... no of course I didn't read the tutorials I just installed it and expected it to sort my mess out for me"

or

"I know it's a beta release but why doesn't it login to my fridge and display a popup when I'm running out of milk?"

Ok, I made that last one up to make a point but if the devs could look into it for me...please.

I know it's frustrating when things go wrong, I know it's tempting to just rush in an install everything that's on offer but just slow down a bit and read the tutorials and search the forums.

If you need help, post a question and/or a suggestion, don't just post a complaint. Trust me, the Devs here are soooo nice and helpful and quick. I've been on other sites where you get shot down in flames for opening your mouth.

Be nice and polite and you'll get all the help you need. Thanks

....and..... relax.

All views are my own and sorry if my made up example questions above are similar to yours, I wasn't trying to single anyone out. Mods feel free to delete if you wish, just needed to vent.

damn... now you got me thinking... I wonder if someone could make a plugin to interface with my Vera Lite (micasaverde.com) to control my z-wave network... then pressing play could activate my "watch movie" scene.

I don't know about the other z-wave controllers but this one has a web server and uses a standard API with JSON (I think it's a RESTful API)

(sorry, don't mean to derail your rant)

Latchmor I agree!  These guys are spending way more time coding and helping people than many people realize.

I am now going to continue with the thread derailment.  (Sorry)

I have the Vera2 and have been hoping for a way to do the same thing.  My first goal was to have the ability to activate my "movietime" scene and "movie over" scene.
Those should be easy to accomplish.
You can trigger a scene by a command similar the the following (use your IP and appropriate scene number)

http://192.168.0.10:3480/data_request?id=lu_action&serviceId=urn:micasaverde-com:serviceId:HomeAutomationGateway1&action=RunScene&SceneNum=2

We would just have to figure out how to create a button that would trigger that command.  I have done this in WMC but i am now using MBT and will have to figure out how this can be done.

In the future I would like to "raise temp".and "lower temp" each of these would adjust the thermostat temp by a degree and show current setpoint and temperature.
This would require more of an interface.

It looks like Program Launcher for MBTheater has just been launched.  This should make this work.

No worries, I feel better today  :D Just got my day job users to worry about now, who can be just as challenging!

I actually thought my Fridge example would spark an idea or two, I should've made it a lot more far fetched, lol.

Cheers

Media Browser Kinect can do this with EventGhost. You can tie in your home automation with Media Browser Kinect.

Voice automate you lights though the system. Everything is in place to do this, however it was commented out of the code because I wanted to work on a Media Browser Controller first and foremost.

Have them dim when you request playback with your voice.

We use USB UIRT, but your z-wave components can be added if you want to help me better understand them, and test some of the outcome.

If  kinect doesn't seem to be you cup of tea, it is totally possible to add functionality to you set up.

We should talk more about this.

As for the main topic of this thread: you are right,  some people get frustrated, best thing to do is relax. All things will be working flawlessly in the near future. Very exciting development strategies are being implemented in Media Browser.

I have to agree with this, but (for me at least) English is not my first language, so this should be a perfect thread to say i hope I'm not stepping on any toes out of my lack of skill. (I read perfectly fine but writing long sentences etc not so much)

I can't talk for the others but i know perfectly well that this is a beta stage and we will see much more change in the upcoming days/weeks/months (I'm no coder but i still read the github commits to see what goodies are on their way). And this is also why we normis should help out and answer the basic shit that we probably have encountered ourselves, to save time and energy for the devs to do their magic :)

Cheers from the (finally) cold Sweden!

Also would i have to change out my refrigerator for this to work ? ;)

I find it most infuriating the way some people demand that this or that be added immediately like it is a life or death situation. Devs work at a pace that is sustainable (except Luke who is a super human) we try to bring things on board as fast as we can. If code wrote itself everyone would have everything they wanted in the program and they would have it yesterday. Unfortunately code doesn't write itself.

Spare a thought for the devs who give up their time (and not a small amount) so your family can have an excellent media application and bear in mind that a dev spending time writing code/testing stuff, formulating plans for the future of mb is time that they don't get to spend with their family or enjoy the product they are producing.

I think a please or a thank you is a small price to pay for what is essentially free.

This is my personal opinion.

In response to Latchmor's first comment, I wholeheartedly agree.  Well said.
