nickglott 5 Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 So I am in the process of trying to ditch my HTPC on my main TV that is a Vizio P55-C1. As my video card in my HTPC didn't have a hdmi 2.0 port to support 60Hz I cannot replicate the frame drop/stutter on it. So this is my first day with the shield so maybe i am missing something.I cant seem to find a common denominator between the media that shows the stutter. I don't use subtitles and at first i was thinking it was ac3 audio but it some play fine. If I drop the hdmi output to 4k 23.976 everything seems to play fine. BTW refresh rate switching is enabled, it gets worse when it is not. Is anyone else having this issue or know of a fix? I have searched as i think its a refresh rate issue and have not found anything for emby but have seen that plex seems to have a a lot of refresh rate switching issues at least since the newer shield updates.
nickglott 5 Posted August 7, 2016 Author Posted August 7, 2016 (edited) Okay, did some more testing and here is what I found out. I was using HDMI5 and on my TV that is the low-lag gaming port. I had my "Game Low Latency turned off" turning it on stops the stutter. I also found out that using the hdmi5 port overrides refresh rate switching because it can only run at 4k@60Hz and 1080p@120Hz so the refresh rate never changes and I am guessing that is why I got the stutter. The good is its gone with that hdmi turning on Game Low Latency. The bad is that turning it on lowers input lag so on bright whites it gives it a strobe effect. Further testing I found this.. Since my HDMI1-4 can support 4k@lower refresh rates, I still get a stutter since it is playing @60Hz unless I turn on Game Low Latency then it goes away. With refresh rate switching on everything works perfect.....except AC3 5.1 dosent always play. AAC 5.1 has no problems what so ever. If I disable bitstram DTS, and audio is AC3 and doesn't play the first time it plays the 2nd time and every time after that. If I downmix to stereo it plays every time. I guess I am confused that I have no audio problems unless refresh rate switching is on. Maybe its a shield problem and not a problem of the emby app. I will continue to do more testing. ebr 16169 Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 In my experience, the Google player does a pretty horrible job of pull-down. Thus, the stuttering you see trying to play 24hz content at a multiple of 30 and smooth when played at 24.
nickglott 5 Posted August 7, 2016 Author Posted August 7, 2016 (edited) I understand that. I am just trying to figure out how to keep at 60Hz since I play my games my game stream games 4k@60Hz plus the UI is not choppy and don't want to keep switching. Okay so I have it mostly figured out. Its AC3 audio causing the problems. With refresh rate switching on, an ac3 fail to play. With the beta ATV app it will play on the 2nd retry time but is always direct streaming running ffmpeg. For a TV file it will direct play with refresh rate switching off but with it on it direct streams. A movie file seems to direct stream every time. I must be missing something here....also why is refresh rate switching even having an effect on AC3 playback issues The attached logs are as follows with shield@60Hz and Emby ATV beta(ac3 wont play with RRS truned on with stable): refresh rate switching off 1st file)Play AC3 TV file it Direct Plays Blacklist S01E12 2nd file)Play AC3 Movie plays 1st try with Direct Streaming with no stutter Sicario(2015) refresh rate switching on 1st file)Play AC3 TV file plays 2nd try with Direct Streming with stutter Blacklist S01E12 2nd file)Play AC3 Movie plays 2nd try with Direct Streaming with stutter Sicario(2015) If the shield can support ac3 why is it so difficult to get those files to work? I don't have a lot and will prob transcode them to ACC if I cant figure this out but would think I should be bale to get it to work. directstream-51d7a6f8-30ea-464d-b624-b80e2c8738f6.txt remux-2c540b13-87c8-47bd-b984-96a27dd27efd.txt remux-3cdf4e51-1aa3-420d-9563-80a363ae41fa.txt remux-7b53d45f-78ac-4c05-9d09-f8d515796d55.txt server-63606171801.txt Edited August 7, 2016 by nickglott
nickglott 5 Posted August 7, 2016 Author Posted August 7, 2016 They play just fine in VLC from emby server over upnp and also using smb. So the issue has to be directly linked to how the ATV app is requesting it.I did try plex(hate plex) and it wants to direct stream as well but in their ATV app you can force it to direct play and it plays fine. Why is every AC3 file not direct playing?
