No Internet no Emby

So our Internet is out again because of a storm. Thank god for Cellular tethering so I can post this. Anyways, none of our clients will play media from the emby server. All media is on local lan. Kodi client just has spinning circle media never starts, this is with direct play and http (tried both). Emby Theater just loads a black screen. Emby for iOS will let you browse media but will not play anything. The only "client" that works is the web interface which is only good on 2 of my clients, both windows based. We have 2 iPads that will not work and 2 shield tvs running kodi. Why does Emby do this when my internet is down? Everything is local so it should not care. Last outage was 5 days and it looks like this one will be too since TWC does not want to roll a truck until weds.

It's probably because you use emby connect to easily login. Emby connect uses third party (EMBY) servers to establish the connection.  Try connecting your clients directly to the server. Add a new server call it "INTERNAL" or something and skip the "Emby Connect" setup (setup manually), you will need to put in the local IP of your emby server and port info. Then log in like normal.   Make sure the clients are on your local wifi.

What IP address are you using in kodi and ios? Kodi works without internet so long as local addresses are used, Theatre client uses online components at this time so requires an internet connection.

I do not use Emby connect. local subnet is 10.0.0.0/24 All clients connect to the server using it's IP 10.0.0.5. All clients are served IPes using MS DHCP as I run AD on VMware. The Emby server runs on one of my AD servers (static ip). DNS is served using AD servers. All media is stored on a Synology NAS that is statically assigned it's IP. As you can tell I should be completely self sufficient. Even if my clients were connecting using DNS they can still look up the IP as I run internal DNS. Can't resolve external dns entries but I should not need them for emby to work.

So did you try to ADD a new server (via one of the clients) and then skip emby connect, put in the IP manually then login?   Just curious..

Not trying to be snippy but what part of I DO NOT USE EMBY CONNECT did you not understand? Emby connect requires you to sign up and sign in.... I have never done either.

I'm about to try on the Shield TV boxes running kodi but I know I have let them try to play for a while and they never play. The difference is they play http instead of direct smb as I have never been able to get the shield to connect to my synology using smb.

Emby Theater currently requires an internet connection but this will be removed in the future. Emby for iOS does not require an internet connection.

Just for my own curiosity, you are using SMB path with IP or name?   Since you are using your own DHCP sever what is your dns suffix?  carrying it over from the ISP?

OK so I understand why Theater does not work but that does not explain iOS or Kodi taking for ever on Windows and not working on Shield. I'm working on getting the log off one shields now. I just tried to test on my iPad again and it says it is not unlocked even though it was earlier ARGH

SMB is just connecting to "Diskstation" my internal domain is totalhavoc.local and external is totalhavoc.net

Since you are using add-on playback, the paths are retrieved in real time from your server. Now, if your Kodi is never going to leave your network, then you can switch to native playback mode (in the add-on settings > sync options) and reset your local database. This way, drect paths to your content is inserted in the Kodi database, which won't ask the add-on to retrieve the path from the server. I hope this helps you.

You could create a second profile in Kodi to test.

They are probably just trying to connect to previously used addresses, timing out, and you're interpreting that as "not working".

Additionally, how have you unlocked Emby for iOS? If you unlocked with Emby Premiere, then this info is re-validated once a week or so, and if this process is failing then that would explain why you can browse but not play.

OK thanks for all the help. I do have emby premiere and that could be the problem with iOS right now as I have not used it in over a week. I know last time we had an outage they were unlocked but would still not play. Can't really diagnose that right now since it has not unlocked.

As for Kodi, it appears to play it just takes 3-5 minutes to actually start the video.

Angelblue I will test direct on my daughters profile as it is small and rebuilds fast. Will direct vs addon work on my shields since they are set to http stream instead of smb?

Posted (edited)

No, native playback mode is only if you direct play (smb/nfs paths) - if you can't directly access your content from Kodi with those paths, then native playback will not work. You need to maybe verify your network credentials (if added, Kodi needs to be restarted)
