Hardware Acceleration

Howdy everyone!

Please forgive my ignorance on this, but thought I'd ask and hopefully not get poked at too much.

I see the section in emby for hardware acceleration, and have obviously pieced together it's for GPU acceleration.

I see the options for Intel Quick Sync, Nvidia & open max.

I run emby on a poweredge t710 server with a built in matrox video card.

What card/hardware do you guys recommend for me to get to make use of this feature?

It's my strong assumption that using this feature will allow for faster transcoding by emby? Whatever benefits would I get from using this?

Thanks guys! I really appreciate any guidance!

Your best bet, honestly is to get something that support quicksync.  The reason behind it is that quicksync isn't limited to 2 streams like nvidia is (4 if you have a newer quadro).

And honestly, I have no idea if open max works in windows!

What would you recommend be the best hardware for intel quick sync?

Can anyone confirm me if i5 6400 has support for for INTEL QUICK SYNC ? I'm about to buy it

You seriously only have to put in i5 6400 in Google to find an answer to that.

Pretty much all iSomething cpus support quicksync.

I have a i3 4130 and couldn't make it work yet.

Also, I've already googled. It says it supports, but just like your answer, it's too generic.

So I asked here to know if somebody else has this processor and can confirm this.

There there. Sometimes it's nice to hear it from someone with usage experience and maybe that's what he was looking for.

Correct, dev.

I used to believe manuals... Then I met exceptions, firmware issues, draft versions...

According to this

You have the same GPU as I do, HD 530. I have an i7 6700k, and the Quick Sync is fully functional

Thanks, I guess that's enough for me.

Do you use Windows or Linux as emby server?

I've read that quick sync doesnt have support for Linux

Windows 10.

But Luke, did you see that I posted in testing the UWP app, with Quick Sync enabled it causes problems with transcoding?

I have no issues with QuickSync and my i7-6600.   Just make sure you use the latest driver.

It's only in the new UWP app that Luke is developing. I have the latest driver, and other than a momentary hiccup when starting live TV, it works well.

I have an Intel Xeon E5530 CPU....Matrox Video Card. This is a Power T710 Server Full tower.

Looks like I can't make use of hardware acceleration in the system's present form.

What do you guys recommend I do or install on this system to help get me going?

For now, I'd say wait until Luke is satisfied with the stability of the hardware accelerators. Then look for video cards that support them. Your CPU should be able to handle the load pretty well. When I built my rig, I designed it around my CPU, because it had the HD 530 GPU.

Luke, is DXVA unable to be implemented in the server, or is it already, and just isn't listed?

I'd like some input on this also. In my case I have Emby Server running on a Windows 7 VM on unRAID (i7 4790). Currently unRAID cannot pass through the iGPU so no QuickSync.

So really I'm looking at the Nvidia Maxwell (GM20X/9XX) or new Pascal (10XX series) cards and as I only have 2 displays I can only ever transcode a maximum of 2. Pascal is too expensive right now. Any recommendations for 9XX cards? Is there any point going for anything higher than a GTX 950 with 2GB RAM?
