Hi all.

I recently switched from Plex, and have noticed a lot of HDD usage with Emby- in Task Manager, there's at 40% disk usage spike every 3 seconds or so.  I'm guessing this is due to transcoding the files to send them out to my two Roku boxes.

It's not a huge deal, but I'd rather transcode a larger chunk at once (with a bit of wait/load time) vs. the way it's set up now.  Is there a setting somewhere I can use to change this?

(Logs are attached.  Also, to prevent major SSD usage, appdata\emby-server is a symlink from C: to D: (the HDD that's getting a lot of use.  System is Windows 10, Intel i5 3570K, 24gb RAM.  Emby server version 3.0.6020.0)

Hi, welcome. Under playback -> transcoding you can try disabling throttling. Then it will always just transcode as fast as it possibly can.

You can also choose where the transcode directory is. In my case I have a spare SSD, that I use for this. That'll reduce overall activity and spare your main drive

Thanks for the help; have tried both of these, but the issue persists.  Disabling throttling and chagning transcoding directory had no effect, nor did moving ffmpeg (in case it was accessing that that causes the IO).

Only other thing that's different is I do have my temp variables set to the hard drive that's always being accessed.  Any other suggestions?

In task manager click the "Open Resource Monitor" at the bottom...  Click the disk tab and sort the disk area by "Total" and confirm it's ffmpeg that's the heavy talker...

ffmpeg doesn't appear; it's MediaBrowser.ServerApplication.exe ; ffmpeg isn't even active at the beginning of an episode when I'd expect transcoding.

I'll try to play around with it a bit more and see if I can figure anything else out, though any other suggestions are appreciated.

you are probably direct streaming then....   And grabbing a chunk every 3 seconds sounds about right...    Try playing a movie then select the gear in the upper right side of the browser window and select a crappy resolution...   it should transcode and use ffmpeg then...  Just as a test..

I moved the transcoding temp dir to C: and saw it start spiking there in the same pattern.

So, I switched the resolution back to default on the Roku (it was lower) and am not seeing the transcoding spikes any more.

However, I am still seeing the D: drive spikes; looks like it's from logging:

MediaBrowser.ServerApplication.exe 7360 D:\sys\appdata\Emby-Server\logs\transcode-blahblah.txt

MediaBrowser.ServerApplication.exe 7360 D:\sys\appdata\Emby-Server\data\userdata_v2.db-journal

MediaBrowser.ServerApplication.exe 7360 D:\sys\appdata\Emby-Server\data\userdata_v2.db

Debug logging is disabled; anything more I can do about that part?

There is not an option that i know of to totally disable logging.   But that "spike" should only be a line of text ever few seconds....  However I guess if it's your goal to be as efficient as possible, maybe request a feature to disable ALL logging?
