5986 Release Notes?

I have to agree with @@dcook on this. If the server runs as a service then yes, you have control over when updates occur, but if - like me - the server runs via the task bar icon (not a service) then updates are pretty much automatic (unless you are anal about checking for them). What about having a pop-up window that appears when you click on the update notification which details the update and includes buttons to approve or deny the update. That should solve this problem and give some control to the user, no matter how they run the server.

just my thoughts...

That is a completely different issue.  You can disable automatic updates if you wish and then go check them out yourself.

Point taken on turning off the auto updates. However, I still concur with dcook on the need for provision of details in a simple and prominent fashion before the update is allowed to occur.

There are two update options "Enable automatic server updates" if disabled gives you a "Update Now" button in dashboard, and if enabled gives you "Restart now" button and you get new notifications.

And "Allow the server to restart automatically to apply updates" which of course does what is says.  Ideally turn it off so you control the update.

But this issue is just with this last stable release showing a link to emby.media and the blog/announces not being present at the time.

Thanks Happy, I will investigate the turning off of auto updates. But as I said to ebr, I still think that dcook has a point - details of the update should be clearly and simply available to the user before running the update, thereby giving them control and choice in the matter.

Isn't that the point of disabling auto-update and awaiting a Blog\Announcement of a New Release?

Posted

The point is the release notes need to be published and pushed out to the Dashboard PRIOR to them being installed not AFTER the fact.

Not sure how else to explain it that you would understand

@@dcook , what they are trying to say is the release notes went out PRIOR to...  For some reason you didn't get it?    This is clickable and takes you to THIS PAGE.  Image at bottom of post, But this is for Stable versions.

I myself figure, if you use DEV or BETA releases, which update multiple times a day...  that you will go to the site and see what they changed..   If they fixed a misspelled a word in the web gui and that was the only change, it takes less time to fix and push than it does to do a whole change log on a misspelled word. One of the side affects of using beta/dev builds in my mind..  I am a beta user...  I disabled auto installs, if you go to github they often don't include small changes in the change log, you have to dig deeper anyway.

BUT if you are talking about DEV/Beta builds, then good idea.... But again I don't think we will gain much, as I said, I often see build after build with no additional items added to the releases page on github.

Plus the image you show in your post above is referencing:  "A new version of Emby Server has been installed" which you would only see AFTER emby was installed, which is opposite of what you are requesting just prior to the image.

Maybe what you mean to request is on the main dashboard  within the "Pending Installations" section, you would like to see a clickable link to github there?

The complaint is it took two weeks for an official blog/announcement. :)  But always available on GitHub.

10-4...      Uhmm....  on a side note H2P,  What could you possibly have stored on 54TB of drives.......  Hopefully they are raided and you only have half that...

Its always easier to complain, than trying to find answers yourself. This is starting to become pointless. There is always a person too stubborn to accept the fact its a pointless conversation.

@@dcook, you are a silly. Stop trying to demand things and just look in the spots these fellows are giving you. Its okay to say, "Ya know, I was kind of being an arrogant ass..I give you that". Take criticism, learn to compromise, and be happy.

Its okay to point out somethings flaws. Its quite another to "harp" on the subject. This isnt really about the missing notes, this is starting to appear like a cry for attention. Dont make it look that way.

Serves at two different locations TV, Movies, and Music.  Just using Stablebit DrivePool and Scanner, one Norco RPC-4224 and one standard tower.

So since you are all saying I am wrong, and that release notes are published prior to installing and that the "new version available" is clickable, I will wait for the next release and see, I will then report back with screen captures.

Again, if you are using Stable version of server and not DEV or beta, then...  Please post...   I usually see the update info in my server dashboard.. but who knows..

No one said you were wrong. Matter of fact, I agree with you. The way you sometimes go about things is wrong. Sometimes mistakes are made, the people dont't follow through, people forget. It doesnt mean it was done intentionally, or mean spirited. Some of your posts, I cant say the same. Instead of using anger, use humor to make your point.

"I await with clown shoes on the next release so I can rejoin the circus that is this thread. Bring popcorn!"

This is what you shouldve said. Dont worry, be happy. :)

The release is always done first, then Luke does a write up of the changes usually with in 24hr.  Like 5971 released May 22 and blogged May 22 but there was a day difference on the maintenance release of 5972 released May 25 and blogged May 26.

You want releases to held until release notes are posted on this site so they appear in Notifications on your server, instead of reading them at GitHub before hand.

Exactly release notes should be published first or at the same time as software update.

Having release notes only days after does not make sense.

We need to be able to read the release notes prior to update.

And yes I am only talking about Stable version, I don't expect same level of documentation for Dev or Beta

Furthermore how would the average user even know to go look on Github for the release notes?

There is no link to it in the notification and there is no release notes section on http://emby.media/windows-server.html, usually on a download page a software vendor will list the version and beside it would be a link to release notes for that version, however in this case it does not even indicate the version number at all, simply says "Stable Release" with links to "Community" and "Wiki" on the right hand side.

And how many average uses even check what is being updated, majority aren't even on the forum?  And only come to the forum if they are having and issue.  But that is here nor there because the information is always available in one place or another.

feel free to visit http://emby.media/blog.html

You should be able to find information about the stable releases here. Granted, the timing of updates to the blog may not coincide with when releases are made known to server owners. This is unfortunate, but not something worth argument. It happens, ya know, shit happens. Sometimes its aggravating, I agree. But its part of human nature to forgot, or miss deadlines. In this context, it doesn't kill the patient because the lab was slow with results. All it does is perhaps make you leery of updating. So disable auto-updates.

All of these options have been given and you continue to give reasons why humans should be perfect. Perhaps this is an argument you should take up with your "God". To be so petty as to accuse them of purpopsely being lackadaisical on this subject is ludicrous. People make mistakes, they forget, aren't following through. Don't beat a dead horse.
