ServerGuy 24 Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 I cant find release notes for the new version anywhere. Will there be any?
ServerGuy 24 Posted July 18, 2016 Author Posted July 18, 2016 Nevermind, found them. Attaching link for anyone else looking for them https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby/releases/tag/3.0.5986
dcook 299 Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 (edited) It would be nice if a link to the release notes were posted automatically to the dashboard when a new version is released: I am sure most would want to see what is changing before doing the update Edited July 18, 2016 by dcook
dcook 299 Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Would you mind sharing where in EMBY Notification the release notes are? I can't find anything under Notifications, all it says is " Application update available": There is no release notes, or links to any release notes They are in notifications.

dcook 299 Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Hi, I tried that URL and just get a blank screen, also where is the button or link in the Dashboard to bring up this notification list? or is this another hidden feature?
CBers 7450 Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 (edited) Click on your notifications indicator next to your user profile image. Are you using an Admin account? . Edited July 18, 2016 by CBers
dcook 299 Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 (edited) Is this what you are talking about? Yes my account is admin account It tells me there is a new version, but still no release notes or link to the release notes Edited July 18, 2016 by dcook
ebr 16172 Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 The link is on the notification of it being installed. I know you are trying to see it before you install it though.
dcook 299 Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 (edited) Sorry maybe I am not being clear: All it says is: A new version of Emby Server is available for download. 4 days ago Please see emby.media for details. Where is the release notes or link to the release notes? Telling me to go to emby.media doesn't help either as I can't find release notes on that website, if you click on Download section there is links only to Wiki and Forums ???? So unless I am stupid and missing something, can you please make it so the release notes or a link to the release notes are pushed out instead of just saying "Please see emby.media for details." We need to read them before updating, no Server Administrator is going to blindly update software without seeing what is being changed. Edited July 18, 2016 by dcook
dcook 299 Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 I just did, you said: The link is on the notification of it being installed. I know you are trying to see it before you install it though. On the notification there is no link to release notes, only emby.media Please read my response again...
ebr 16172 Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 On the notification of the new version being installed you can click it and it will take you to the release notes. As I said above, I know this isn't what you are looking for but it is to what Happy was referring.
dcook 299 Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 (edited) So your saying the link to the release notes is only available AFTER the version is installed? That is just wrong in so many ways. Can you please add link to release note in the notification of new version available instead of just saying "Please see emby.media for details." (which by the way is also wrong, because emby.media does not even have any release notes either, or at least I could not find any links to them) On the notification of the new version being installed you can click it and it will take you to the release notes. As I said above, I know this isn't what you are looking for but it is to what Happy was referring. Edited July 18, 2016 by dcook 1
Happy2Play 9780 Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 (edited) Normally it does but there were to many updates to list. This was for 3.1.67.0 and is hyperlinked to GitHub server version release notes. But if you want release notes before you install then go to https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby/releases Edited July 18, 2016 by Happy2Play
dcook 299 Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 (edited) Would it be to difficult to link to the official release notes in the new version available notification? I understand you can goto github, but there is not even any reference to that in the notification, only emby.media. Why are you making it difficult for users to see what is being changed prior to updating? Edited July 19, 2016 by dcook
Happy2Play 9780 Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 (edited) Did you not get the announcement that went out today? Normally there is posted sooner, but the update will always be available before the announcement. Most notifications are clickable Edited July 19, 2016 by Happy2Play
dcook 299 Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 (edited) I pasted earlier already what I see in my Dashboard and notifications, the only reference is to go to http://emby.media there was nothing else. And you still don't think its wrong to release an update prior to releasing the release notes or announcements? Edited July 19, 2016 by dcook
Happy2Play 9780 Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 (edited) Well it is your choice to update or not before reading the release not either via the Announcement when it is made or GitHub posted with every update. So you can't say the options are not there. But the real question is why isn't your server receiving the Announcement blogs. My Stable, Beta, and Dev servers received the notification I posted above. Only difference it I used custom css to word-wrap everything in Notifications. Edited July 19, 2016 by Happy2Play
dcook 299 Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 No the real question is why there is no link to the official release notes when notified that there is a new version. And why there is no link to release notes on the Download or Support sections of http://emby.media Simply saying: "Please see emby.media for details." is not acceptable And displaying the Release Notes only after upgrading is not acceptable, these should be pushed down prior to upgrading so we can see what is being changed before deciding to upgrade or not. CBers 7450 Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 And displaying the Release Notes only after upgrading is not acceptable, these should be pushed down prior to upgrading so we can see what is being changed before deciding to upgrade or not. It would be nice to see Release Notes beforehand, but you don't have to upgrade until you want to, or until you look at the release notes on github. I agree that the URL needs updating in the Dashboard, but I'm sure that will happen soon. It was a pleasant surprise to see there was a link added the last few dev releases, even though it was only visible after the upgrade. Still, small steps
dcook 299 Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 The point is, that one has to figure out that they must go to Github in order to get the information that should be available on the Emby Dashboard, or at the very least direct links provided. Even on http://emby.media there is no links anywhere to the release notes in the server download section. Yes, this Announcement/Blog was late but this is usually done the same day as the Stable release usually within a short time of the release or at least in the past it has been, and that would cover the download and support sections. And it is your choice to auto-update before reading what has changed.
jordy 284 Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 I have to agree with @@dcook on this. If the server runs as a service then yes, you have control over when updates occur, but if - like me - the server runs via the task bar icon (not a service) then updates are pretty much automatic (unless you are anal about checking for them). What about having a pop-up window that appears when you click on the update notification which details the update and includes buttons to approve or deny the update. That should solve this problem and give some control to the user, no matter how they run the server. just my thoughts...
