24p @ 60htz

Hi

I have just got my roku 3 set up on my LG 1080p TV it is connected @1080p / 60htz

All my movies are ripped bluray @ 1080/24p mkv

i notice very slight but annoying stutter on sweeping shots in the movies, checked the roku and it connects at 60htz to the tv.

I have tried default setting so video is transcoded and i have bumped it up tp 20mb so it plays direct with same results.

So when a movie is playing at 24fps how can it be smooth?

is there any way to change this so i get fluid motion as i do on my htpc,i use mad vr smooth motion on that set up.

The Tv has a smooth motion setting but this greyed out on the rokus input.

Hope someone can help.

Disclaimer: I do not have a Roku

The reason that smooth motion is not available on your TV is because the ROKU is running at a too high a refresh rate for it to be able to perform frame insertion.

If the Roku allows you to do frame rate switching, enable it. This will hopefully drop the movie to 24fps when you press play. You can then either set your TV to not modify the steam and play back at 24fps (movie like experience that a lot of people prefer) or you should now be able to enable smooth motion on your TV as the frame insertion algorithm supports 24fps.

Thanks for response

Further testing reveals iplayer app to be very choppy. Obviously uk tv is 50htz. Roku is set at 60! This is not good.

Very disappointed with this.

On a plus side the smooth motion setting appears on the tv settings if I tell the tv roku is a blurry player in settings.

This tv setting improves the judder in mkvs.

My Apple TV has different frame rate settings. I hope roku can update this feature via an update.

Can frame rate conversion be done on the server at transcoding stage.?

We do a check within the channel to set the FPS of the video itself to either 23.97 fps or 29.97 fps. However that doesn't mean it is actually outputting in anything other then 60hz. It may be a limitation of the Roku itself. Does any other channel correctly output and change the hz of the TV to 24, 50 or 60?

I have tried I player,4od,and 5 all stream fine but play back is stuttering.

Checking info on tv reports 1080p @60 htz.

Looks like the roku is stuck to this output.

I have pm roku to see if an update may change this. Unless it's a hardware limitation.?
