AC3 codec support (for transcoding to)

What's stopping decoding DTS and reencoding to multi-channel (5.1) AC3?

the settings of your codecs?

@trusselo: not sure what you're asking. I can provide mediainfo output of movies with DTS that can't be transcoded to ac3 when i supply ?audiocodec=ac3 to the stream.m3u8 call.

I suspect it's not an easy answer and might include 3rd party/proprietary codecs, balancing cost(time/CPU util./# of channels) vs. quality, etc.

your post wasnt any more helpful than my response. and that was an intentional point.

So you are re-encoding whole files and are looking for an easy way to change the DTS to AC3?

almost sounded like you wanted transcoding on the fly for audio only before.

i didn't think video mattered (wanted to isolate the question to be audio only). But since you ask.

The device I'm interested in supports h264 which my media library is full of, just needs to be streamed.

However the DTS doesn't work on the device (ATV).

This is why the question was what's keeping the server from being able to support ?audiocodec=ac3 and provide 5.1 channel audio from a DTS 5.1+ channel source.

Excuse me if I make assumptions and they're wrong. Please call me out on incorrect assumptions :)

@@BC101 the only thing stopping us at the moment is time it is on the list of things to add and it will be there soonish sorry I can't be more precise.

I was going to start a new topic but saw this one and thought this is along the same lines as my question. I've been a long time MB user and have a media center and an xbox 360 extender. Both are connected to home theater systems (large HDTVs with 5.1 audio). In order to get the best out of my high quality movie/blu-ray rips on both systems, I re-encode everything to WTV files which support AVC and DD5.1 on PCs and extenders. This requires me oftentimes to use software that reencodes DTS to DD5.1 before creating the WTV. This has worked well, except it's a lot or work, WTV is not a well-supported universal format, not very robust, and hard to get metadata information out of it. It would be great to just use MKV with the original DTS (which I prefer to DD5.1). I've been using the MB3 beta now for several months, but I admit I haven't used it on the extender much lately. However, a couple months back, I thought I played a MKV with DTS (that I had not yet converted to WTV/DD) on the extender and instead of the extender playing it as 2-channel as it always had, my amp was decoding it as DD5.1. I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. Was I hallucinating or is there something in MB3 that  can transcode DTS streams to DD on extenders? I did test this the other day and it was playing 2-channel again. So now I'm just confused. Can someone tell me if this was worked on or will be worked on in the future? Thanks.
