DS916+ Emby transcoding performance

Hi solabc16,

First of all, good job!

I only have one small remark about the quality of conversion with VAAPI acceleration enabled. There are a lot of blocks (big blocks!) in scene changes with quality setting 720p 1Mbps or 480p 720kbps (yes I know very bad internet connection).

Any suggestion?

Bye,

Nephilim

Hello All

Release 3.0.8200.0-1 has been published today for Synology/XPEnology, which includes experimental support for VA API h/w transcoding on 'braswell' based machines.

Many thanks to @@stratumorien, @@moulin and @@newb for working through this with us.

Please let us know how you get on and post any comments or queries here.

This is a new feature, hence comes with the tag 'experimental' and I'm sure we'll need to work through and refine a few things along the way.

- James

Wow awsome :) so this should work with a braswell CPU like the Intel Celeron N3150 with XPEnology? Regarding settings, I leave VAAPI device like "/dev/dri/card0" and ffmpeg is left to use the own version.

Then I should get hardware transcoding, right?

Hello @@Vlaves

Unfortunately, it's not as straight forward as that. XPEnology is derived from the version of DSM used on the DS3615xs, which did not support h/w transcoding.

For that reason, it's unlikely that the necessary support will be in the kernel.

Do you currently have XPEnology running on an N3150?

If so, can you run the diagnostics and send logs utilities mentioned here and I can take a closer look: https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/40411-xpenology-users-read-me/?p=377703

No VAAPI support for codec mpeg4 profile -99.

Looks like we will have to disable it for certain media.

Hi James,

thanks for the support. Yes I run currently XPEnology on a ASROCK N3150 mini-ITX Board with 8GB of RAM.

Hope the logs will help. they just got send. Filename is "sendlogs_Heimserver_synology_bromolow_3615xs_20161020T092925UTC.tgz"

Hope the name is enough as it seems I can't upload the log file itself here.

Thanks again for the support :) Hope this can be done on XPEnology too

Hello,

Sorry, dont want to be high jacking a thread here, did a few searches but couldnt find anything. But with this latest update, are we able to enable hardware transcoding on the DS214play model?

or is that still buggy?

Sorry, I tried to follow the thread, but a lot of it was over my head.

Hello @@xxJonoxx

No problem, it's all related. We've only tested on the 'braswell' based machines so far and I was about to put a message out asking if anybody with an 'evansport' (DS214play, DS415play) based machine would like to test.

If possible, could you run the diagnostics and send logs utilities, details below?

  >> Diagnostics: https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Synology-:-How-to-Run-Diagnostics

  >> Send Logs : https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Synology-:-How-to-Send-us-Support-Logs

No need to post the output here, just the file reference the send logs utility will give you.

If you're not running 3.0.8300, then I would recommend upgrading to that version first.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply James. Its a bit late where I am right now, but I will be more than happy to give it a go for you tomorrow.

Hi James,

Sorry, I didn't realise it was such a painless process or I would have done it last night.

I have sent the logs as requested.

I can also do it on a different DS214play (my sisters, if required)?

Thanks for your time

Cheers

Jono

Edit: PM'd the log name as per instructions.

Hi @@xxJonoxx

Thanks for the logs, I've just taken a look at them.

It looks like we'll have to take a slightly different approach for the 'evansport' based machines.

I'll give it some consideration in the coming days.

Best

Hello James,

Yesterday I have tested to see a movie with the option "Intel Quick Sync" and after with "Video acceleration API (VA API) and for this 2 option, I had an error when I lunched the movie.

I had seen my movie only with the  option "no acceleration".

My movie is an h.264 .m2ts.

For your help :

Diagnostic script run completed, the log can be viewed at the location below...
/var/packages/EmbyServer/scripts/utilities/logs/rundiags_20161023T142002UTC.log

Upload completed successfully, please include this filename with your ticket...

Have a good day James

Hello @@Darkjeje

I've just published an updated beta for your platform, you should see it in Package Center now. (if not, try a manual refresh)

Once you have it installed, let me know and I'll run through the next steps for testing.
