New W10 with WMC Rebuild - simplest and easiest codec setup

I've just upgraded my media PC from win7 to win10 and am running the WMC "hack" install with Emby WMC.

 

It's all working great and having a clean slate I wanted to get some advice.

 

I've spent many wasted hours mucking around with codecs of all flavours in the past and am utterly fed up with it now so wanted to go with the easiest!

 

Is there a single install I can use to let me play all my videos and get the correct audio channels?

 

Most of my stuff is standard mkv x264 with 5.1 of various flavours.

 

I used to use the LAV filters but cannot find the guide I used and to be honest I cannot tell you if they were what was making it all work or one of the many other solutions I tried on Win7!

First, I would test things out to see if maybe W10 provides what you need already.

 

Then, if not, just install LAV.  There isn't really much of a guide needed.  Just install it.

Thanks, I was hoping Windows 10 would cope better but it failed to cope with most tbh.

Now the amd drivers are giving me jip too now.

I've used Shark's codecs on all my media centers for years and never had a problem playing anything I throw at them. I'm currently running two Windows 10 PCs with version 12 of the WMC "hack" as you refer to it and Emby for WMC as well as WMC's live and recording TV functionality with Sharks codecs installed.

 

I posted some screenshots of my Shark settings a while back here http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/31127-windows-10-media-center-crashes-not-responding-after-playing-mor-ethan-one-file/&do=findComment&comment=301113 these settings allow me to play anything I've tried successfully.

 

Just be a little careful installing Sharks codecs as it tries to get you to install a couple of bits of crap at the beginning of the installer that you don't need.

Well it plays everything with the LAV filters with 2 issues.

 

1. It's in stereo instead of 5.1.

2. The LAV filters are set to show tray icons but they never do.

The LAV splitter will have settings for how to handle audio.

@@ebr what program do you use to test codecs?

If you use WMC it's tough to see what codecs are being used and if you use Windows media player it can be the x86 version when you might want the x64 version.

Mpc-hc maybe?

It's very straight forward indeed.

 

1. Download the latest "release" of the "hacked" version of WMC from here.

 

2. Unzip it to a folder name with no spaces in it (I always use C:\wmc).

 

3. In that folder right click on "_TestRights.cmd" and choose run as administrator.

 

4. If the above causes a second cmd prompt window to open, then you're good to go on the installation.

 

5. Right click on "Installer.cmd" and choose run as administrator.

 

6. Wait for it to finish.

 

7. Reboot.

 

8. Enjoy Windows Media Center.

Well got it all sorted.

Installed LAV filters but forgot to run the win7dsfilter app to stop it using the Ms codecs for everything!

Standard ehome WMC remote works perfectly. No idea with Cable Card (don't even know what it is if I'm honest), I'm in the Uk which has FTA Digital Terrestrial and Satellite.

gotcha, cable card is a descrambler card used to tune american cable TV

Error message said that 'Find' was not recognised as an internal/external command. 

 

Any ideas on how to fix this?

The error is basically saying that the command "find" used in the batch file isn't on your system in any of the places it can look (set in the PATH variable). Might be a home vs Pro version thing, not sure?

 

Best bet is have a scout through the thread over on mydigitallife, it's those guys that got this working http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/61061-DISCUSSION-Patch-WMC-to-run-on-Windows-10-final-amp-possible-alternatives

Im curious as well if win 10 WMC can handle encrypted cable card stuff... Thats the only reason I'm still on Win7 for my mediacenter
