Web interface external players

I've recently taken the time to rename all my videos and to set up Emby on my home server. Everything works well so far, including the plugin for Kodi on my HTPC. I generally watch videos either through a browser when not at home, through Kodi in my living room and I use good ol' MPC-HC on my desktop.

 

I was wondering if the external player feature of the web interface is somehow configurable or if it only supports VLC. Ideally I'd like to get an URL containing a path to the video obtained using Path Substitution, is something like that currently possible? If Emby could provide that path in the URL, a basic script or a very simple launcher could be used with pretty much any video player, without needing more complex applications running in the background just to launch a player.
