Eddie 12 Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 Just wondering how a NAS or something like UNRAID would affect the network. Does the data have to go to the Server then to the client or Does the data go from the NAS to the client skipping the Server I cant imagine it skips the server because what happens when things need to be transcoded i would imagine the server handles that. This prob wouldnt affect a gigabit network but maybe a 100 mbps network i can see it affecting.
techywarrior 689 Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 It would increase the traffic but it shouldn't even effect a 100mb network unless you have a 2-3 simultaneous streams (and that would be at worst case) I think you would realistically find that you can stream 5-6 safely. A lot would depend on the format and resolution of the streams of course.
SilentAssassin 96 Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 I would assume this is dependant on the client accessing the media. The likes of MBC and MBT access the media directly so I would guess that this doesn't pass through the server. It would only be clients which need transcoded media would pass through the server as it is the server that is responsible for this process.

It reads the media directly, but both of those clients would still talk with the server to give it updates on playback position. But that traffic would be so minor it wouldn't be noticeable.
