Lost Custom Sort Names After Recent Update

Not sure when exactly, but sometime in the past 3-4 days it would seem, I've lost all of the edits that I made to my movie collection's Sort Names.

I used the MetaData editor built into the server dashboard and did things like removing the "the" at the beginning of all movies starting with "The".  I also named various movies with non-sequential names (like the 6 "Fast and Furious" movies) to some sort name that would put them in the correct order.  Same for the Harry Potter flicks, etc.

All of the edited sort names worked fine for a couple of weeks and then last night I noticed that everything was back to the sort order matching the display name (all of the "The"s were back, and the sorted movie groups were back in display name order).

I don't have MBS set to download any metadata, and while I use Media Center Master for the initial gathering of metadata, it is set to only run manually and on a special "RIPS" folder, not my full collection folders, so that it is only working on the specific movies that I just ripped.  Plus it hasn't been run in about 2 weeks anyway.

Any ideas, or ideas on how to prevent that from being overwritten when I go back and make all of those changes again?

I know that there is a "collection" option coming at some point, but for some movies I am not sure that I want a collection, but just for them to be sorted using the sort name and then not overwritten.

Thanks in advance.

are the values still in your xml files?

My edited values are not.  The xml files show things like "2 Fast 2 Furious" for both the display name and sort name and not "2 Fast 2 Furious"  for the display name and "Fast and Furious 2" for the sort name like I manually set it to.

i'm honestly not sure because nothing in the system writes to the sort name value except for the field on the edit page. none of our internet providers touch it.

OK.  I will re-do them all tomorrow and hope for the best.  I wonder if I should make the .xml files all read-only to prevent something from overwritting them....

Thanks for checking.

Don't we still have a sort name provider that will build that value?

no it's actually on the fly, and the calculated value doesn't overwrite their custom value if they have one

Well, the last update did it to me again.  Everything was sorted fine with all of the "fast and furious movies" grouped, Harry Potter in the right order, etc.

Then I went out of town for a week for work.  I get home today, and go to watch a movie.  I have added nothing to my movie library, I haven't run any metadata program, etc.  And BAM.  All sorted names have been reset again.  Now 2 Fast 2 Furious is the first in my movie list, Harry Potters are in name sort order, same with Star Trek, LOTR, etc.  Everything got reset.  The ONLY change was the upgrade to the latest server app.

Or was this part of the published "you will have to rescan your media" message related to the latest version?

I am tempted to block MB from even being able to write to the metadata since I will have to spend about 30 minutes fixing everything again.

Sorry, but I just needed to vent.  My wife and daughter both commented on how my HTPC isn't everything that I promised because I can't get forced subtitles to work, the movies get un-sorted (or is that re-sorted), and they hear me complain about madVR not being fully ready yet.

They notice it a lot when I have to stop a movie that has forced subtitles, go grab the blu-ray, put it in, and play it through Total Media Theater, and thus basically not having any benefit of having a HTPC.

It just gets frustrating.  Sorry.  I'll stop.

I'm having the same issues, in fact I lost any and all customizations I had done (sort name, changing a primary poster from it's default to a more preffered one in the list, etc)... I'm hesitant to go through and re-edit/fix my entire db (couple tb's) again until this problem is sorted, only I can't seem to pinpoint exactly why or how this is happening,

My most impending issue is with "sort name", because without it my catalog scatters all over the place. To illustrate, the file "Planet of the Apes - 02 - Beneath the Planet of the Apes.avi" was manually edited to be simply under the sort name "Planet of the Apes 02" (logically listing the series together), but now has been automatically overwritten and sorted as "Beneath the Planet of the Apes".

In addition, now each time I manually enter (and save) any data in the "sort name" field, it is inevitably overwritten the next time the item is refreshed.

I'm at a loss - any ideas?

I think you were on point with the local xml being disabled, I've been tinkering all day - plug one leak and two more spring up, but I believe it's working now... thanks a million either way!!

what are your metadata settings? do you have local xml saving enabled?

there was a bug in the previous version of the server where it wasn't reading sort titles from your xml. now that's fixed, which for most will be a good thing, but could vary depending on what the values are in your xml.
