nottaclue1 0 Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 (edited) Hello everyone, I have been chasing an issue for several months on my AFTV gen 1 and AFTV stick. I would categorize the issue as playback not smooth or slightly choppy. I have searched and searched and tried attacking the problem from different angles to no avail. Maybe someone has an idea. My setup, Emby server is running on a Windows 2012 Server with 8GB of memory, dual Xeon E5630's, and an Intel Gigabit NIC (correction here, the NIC is a Broadcom BCMH5709C). Server is connected to a managed gigabit 24port switch. The AFTV gen 1 is a wired connection to the same gigabit switch running the latest version of 5.0.5.1. The AFTV stick is wireless of course with newest version as well. In the past, I would use MakeMKV to simply rip a DVD and place it into the media library. Since, I have switched to Bluray and I rip with MakeMKV, then use Handbrake to encode for the media library. I use h.264, constant quality at 18, framerate same as source, high profile, level 4 to encode with as this seems to most closely match the specs outlined in the Amazon supported media formats document from Amazon. I can open up VLC on a pc and browse directly to the media share. When playing the completed file through VLC on my computer it looks wonderful, smooth playback. I also used VLC with DLNA through Emby and playback is also smooth. So, on my AFTV gen 1, the same movie that is smooth (btw, all my movies experience the same thing regardless of older DVD with straight rip or newer encoded Blueray) with playback without stuttering (as in full glitch or stop) but the motions are just not smooth. It doesn't matter if there is action or not. Panning motions are very noticeable but the symptoms exist all the time. The AFTV is not transcoding through the server. It appears to be direct play. The AFTV stick obviously transcodes through the server but it has the exact same symptoms. After searching and searching I have messed with the obvious issue of framerate. My tvs are not exceptionally new and will only do 60hz. They both do 3:2 pulldown, however, I am not sure if it would ever be used as the AFTV's would output at 60p. So, does anyone know how the AFTV handles 24fps? I 'thought' the new OS release would allow the AFTV to support 24fps but it appears AFTV always outputs 60p to my tv. In that case, would the AFTV be handling 3:2 pulldown or telecine? I will admit, I am not a video expert. Maybe I am missing something or don't quite understand. Hopefully someone here can throw an idea at me or help me understand what to do to get smooth playback on these AFTV's through Emby. Maybe the issue doesn't even lie in the framerate scenario. I have a series ripped and the framerate is 30fps and it also experiences the same issues when played back on AFTV. It seems there are quite a few happy users of this device and it works great with Prime, Hulu, and any web service I throw at it. Just not my own library. Any help would be appreciated. nottaclue1 0 Posted May 5, 2016 Author Posted May 5, 2016 On a movie that I have been heavily testing with this past week the overall bitrate in MediaInfo is 7128kbps. Some other bluray items I have are 9478, 5437, and 8405kbps.
