AxeMan 25 Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 i noticed an entry in the log at startup that MB was connecting to http://bot.whatsmyipaddress.com ... is there a reason for that? I have no ports forwarded on my router, other than VPN and would like to keep it that way. Is MB emulating what Plex does in terms of tunnel/port forwarding? Been a long time MB user - I like where MB3 is going - but this got me a little concerned
Redshirt 1487 Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 The server determines it's external IP in an attempt to make it easier for mobile clients to set up the connection for users. I'm not sure what clients are taking advantage of it yet. It's fairly high on my todo list for the Android client.
AxeMan 25 Posted December 31, 2013 Author Posted December 31, 2013 thanks - does it advertise this info ? or only when i'm within the network - sort of like a hint, if you want to connect from the outside, use this IP, add port forwarding on your router, etc? thanks for the replies.
CBers 7450 Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 no. our mobile clients are going to use it so that if you first connect internally within your lan, it will already know your external ip for when you leave the house. of course this assumes port forwarding is setup. but it's designed to make external connections a little easier. What happens when your external IP ADDRESS changes?
CBers 7450 Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 clients should keep getting the new ADDRESS everytime they're inside your network Not sure I like the idea of a client reaching out for the external IP address. I'd prefer to manually enter it myself, hence one of the reasons for having a DDNS account.
Logos302 86 Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 yes but this is for the masses and not everyone can setup DDNS. They are trying to make it simple for all. How ever I do get where you are coming from. Might be nice to have it as a configurable option in the server. IE : Manually setup external IP/DNS or automatic figure it out. This would allow for those that know about DDNS and can set it up to use it and those that don't to just let it happen.
