Hi,

Just like ever week transcoding is failing again on the Firetv stick at my girlfriends place.

Starting the app it trows can't connect to server errors but still shows the login screen. I can login and browse my content, even start playing something. This morning I was lucky and it worked for a full 25 minutes. This afternoon the server again craps itself and after a couple of minutes stops playing.

It gives a failed to load video error. I need to close the app because it looks like the connection is lost. Then the app is unable to connect to the server at all.

Wtf is going on? It was working until last month but I think after some server update these problems started occurring. I didn't change anything on my server.

It's extremely annoying, I bought into the Emby ecosystem so I could watch my media remotely but I'm spending much more time trying to figure out why things aren't working than I'm actually watching stuff.

Which log do I need to upload?

Even though I've disabled dlna and don't use it the log shows a lot of dlna entries. Could this have anything to do with my problems?

Can you please provide the transcoding log? thanks.

Logs are attached. I replaced the WAN IP's with 1.1.1.1 (server) and 2.2.2.2 (client).

I've attached all logs generated today (24th) after trying to play 1 file. After ~4 minutes the server crashed. This issue is not related to just this file, the same happens with every file.

Version 3.0.5913.0

Luke,

Did you have a chance to look at the logs?

Posted

The log doesn't indicate any obvious problem that would cause the server to crash. What I would do is update to the latest version of Emby Server, then let us know if the issue persists. Thanks.

Upgrading to the latest version doesn't fix the problem. It does seems like the latest version is preventing the server from crashing but it does stop playing video after a couple of minutes.

Could this be subtitle related? I didn't have any problems with a file that didn't have any subs. Worked fine for 25 minutes. Right after I played a file with subs and 5 minutes later the video hangs with the Firetv stick giving a cannot load video error.

Subtitles on the Firetv app are bugged anyway. Turning off subs doesn't work. Changing language does but selecting none doesn't do anything and keeps displaying the latest selected subs. Closing and restarting the file won't fix this, probably need to open a different file first.

Skipping forward is Also awkward with the timeline showing 0:00, I don't remember this being a problem before.

Could you look into subs causing issues? Subs used to crash the android app as well.

This is with regards to internal and external subs.

Talked too soon. Leaving subs off still makes videos stop playing after a couple of minutes and the server is still crashing before coming back up in ~ 5 minutes.

Is it possible to downgrade the server? I want to go back to a ~ 6 week old version, see if that fixes things.

Android app has the same problem. Same file, subs off, bitrate 1mbps instead of 5 but still crashing after almost the same time (4:10 vs 4:00).

Didn't test another file on android but as the same thing happens with multiple perfectly normal files on the Firetv stick I doubt it's going to be any different for android.

Something is seriously wrong. Are you able to stream transcoded content over WAN?

Hi, please provide server and transcoding logs of playback with subtitles. Thanks.

Luke, unfortunately it doesn't seem sub related after all. Same thing happening with subs turned off. The logs I provided earlier was the same file as this time including subs so if nothing showed up that time...

I'll upload the logs later on anyway.

Luke,

Attached all the logs.

28th

Played files from a different location than the 27th. Film1 played OK for about 30 minutes but crashed the moment I wanted to load subtitles. This was using the web based player on the latest Firefox version.

Film2 crashed after a couple of minutes without me doing anything. Subs turned off. Again using the web based player.

27th

Tried playing files from a firetv stick and my android phone.

On both devices film1 and film2 crash after a couple of minutes. Doesn’t matter whether subtitles are enabled or not.

The only file that played without any problems is film4, the remux log.

For what’s it is worth, the server is connected to a 1/1gbps internet connection. Both remote locations are 100+mbps.

Later today I’ll try playing the same films on my phone and pc over LAN, see if that makes any difference.

ok, i looked at a few and didn't see any obvious problems, but please note that posting logs in mass quantities such as this is not always useful. It would be better to provide a smaller amount and instead discuss each one. For example, in this log I used app X to play video Y and I got result Z. Thanks.

Luke,

With all due respect, I am happy that there is a support forum, but I bought this app three times and though this is by no means a large amount of money, the contrary really, but I am a paying customer and I do expect some help if the most fundamental function of this software isn’t working as it should.

You asked me for logs, I gave you the logs.

I told you which device at which time crashed playing a certain file. I don’t know what else I can do. The same thing is happening on three different devices, on two different internet connections. I gave you the file names so it shouldn't be that hard to match that to the logs. I certainly am expected to do my job with far less information available most of the time.

I don’t have unlimited access to multiple internet connections and I definitely don’t have unlimited time to test things. I’ve bought into this product so I can relax a bit after work. Not so I can add another 2 days a week doing what I’m already doing 5 days a week.

Not unless you start paying me ;)

If you are not happy with the way I provided the logs you should let me know exactly how you want me to test, what kind of file you want me to play and which log file you want me to associate with that transcode etc.

@@Ponyo, as someone that does support for a living, here's the process.  This is pretty much always the process for every product in the computing world:

  1. Check your watch.  What time is it?
  2. Reproduce the issue, in this case play a movie that fails and allow it to fail.
  3. Check your watch.  What time is it?
  4. Zip up the logs that have been touched between the times in steps 1 and 3.  Logs that weren't updated in that time window aren't related to the reproduction you just did.
  5. Attach logs to incident.  Note that you started the test at time 1 and the failure occurred when playing movie X at time 3 with the submission.

Thanks, you're doing a great job supplying these. I was just looking for some discussion of the activity that occurred during the time of these logs. Thanks.

I know I might sound like a dick from time to time but I really don't mean to. I work in networking and I know how hard it can be to troubleshoot, let alone obtain some useful information. I have to do this stuff in between while I'm at my gf's place so yes I know the info I provide might not be the best but I simply don't have the time to get it all sorted out nicely.

Back to the problem at hand.

Transcoding on lan (firefox, android) doesn't appear to be any problem. Well, I did notice a bunch of new bugs like certain subs causing low framerates, seeking not working in android etc but I will open separate topics for that later.

Because LAN transcoding appears fine it made me go through my firewall and remove everything related to Emby, reinstall Emby over my current installation (probably meaningless) and allow Emby again. Yesterday I did some short testing with the 4G connection on my phone and it didn't crash after about 10 minutes which is better than I managed over the past 2 weeks so just maybe the problem is now fixed.

Hopefully I got some time at work later today to turn on a stream here.

Okay I dare say the problem is gone now.

I'm guessing somehow it might have been an issue with the windows firewall. I don't know why but there were multiple Emby entries. Not wrong settings, but 4 entries (two for the emby .exe and two for the http and https port).

What I did was reinstall the server over my existing installation, run it at startup instead of as a service, remove all firewall entries and only let the emby .exe pass.

Didn't have any issues over the weekend so that might have fixed it.
