I think  you're just piggybacking into the thread with unrelated issues. Please see how to report a problem. Thanks!

I am also unable to play MKV files. The GUI and the animated backdrops work but when I click play in the browser  I get "video error, there was an error playing the video". The video keeps playing until I click the "ok" button and then it goes back to the selected video screen. When I try to play the movie in Theater it just spins and nothing happens. I am on Windows 10 and the server is Win Home Server 2011.

Edit:

It acts like this is a transcoding issue. Is there a way we can completely turn off transcoding?

Edit 2:

Added a log file

A small chunk of the mkv file that your trying to play is what he's asking for.  So that he can investigate what properties it has.

Why don't you just start over and please see how to report a media playback issue. Thanks.

Nice reply, I stated in the previous post that I solved the issue. I read the "how to report" but this thread was the same issue. Sorry for trying to help figure it out, in which I did and reporting back.
