Brendon 119 Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 Does anyone know of a decent one anywhere, i have searched forever and the best i have ever come up with is http://imvdb.com/ and they are very restricted to the point artist info can only be entered by the artist themselves which seems a ridiculous way of going about it, also i notice they are a company so i can only imagine down the track you'll be asked to pay for .api access like imdb. As a music video lover it is very frustrating and i am sitting here thinking i should just make one considering i am entering all this information manually anyways, but ohhh the cost and the frustration lol So please if you know of a better one tell me before i crack my skull against the desk again
steve1977 67 Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 http://theaudiodb.com/ is not bad and for sure not worse than the one you are quoting above. Ultimately, it may be easiest for MBS to treat musicvideos the same way like music. In this case, you would not worry about metadata as it can use the same one (poster, backdrops) for artist art.
Koleckai Silvestri 1154 Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 (edited) Not specifically videos but the information should match the song itself. http://musicbrainz.org/ - Rough in presentation though. Their Picard app will suck the information out for you. http://www.allmusic.com/ - I have found a lot of information here but I don't think they have an API. Edited December 30, 2013 by Wayne Luke
Brendon 119 Posted December 30, 2013 Author Posted December 30, 2013 Not specifically videos but the information should match the song itself. http://musicbrainz.org/ - Rough in presentation though. Their Picard app will suck the information out for you. http://www.allmusic.com/ - I have found a lot of information here but I don't think they have an API. Not a fan of musicbrainz Wayne, as you say presentation is annoying, it's not hard to add some style, tvdb and tmdb do it no problem and i am sure it takes me more time correcting mistakes it makes, the true Picard would never allow it lol AMG has been one of my main guides for a long time now, i base my genres from them, they do have an API but it is outrageously expensive from my understanding. Steve that site is not bad, not much info on the actual vids but i nice site pleasant to browse, thanks for that.
steve1977 67 Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Let me jump in to defend Musicbrainz. While I completely agree that the web presentation is extremely poor, the actual information is by far the most accurate and the level of of granularity is amazing. Better than anything else out there. Also, once you get used to Picard, it is a fantastic tagger. Disagree with you that it does mistakes. Just takes some time to get used to how it works and then it is great. Take the time and familiarize yourself with it, definitely worth it. You can even tag your musicvideos with it if you are comfortable that they are tagged as singles. One huge advantage of musicbrainz compared to anything else out there is that that it used releases and release groups. While this is also the reason why it is less easy to understand / navigate, it makes it so much more accurate. You have no idea how annoyed I am when using last.fm or others to see that the album year is always wrong or at least not the original release year (for example Beatles albums only released in the 90ies as seen on http://www.last.fm/music/The+Beatles/+albums). Musicbrainz may be painful, but at least you can get the real original release year out of it once used right.
steve1977 67 Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Also took a look at allmusic.com. Allmusic.com is based on gracenote, which is as good or even better than musicbrainz. Unfortunately, gracenote cannot be accessed (or as you rightfully say only with huge money). Musicbrainz is basically the free version of gracenote (copied its concept in the public domain), so the more people start using it, the more it establishes itself as the standard.
steve1977 67 Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 You may also want to add to this thread. I believe that we need a different way to organize musicvideos to create a closer connection with music. See my suggestion in the thread below: http://mediabrowser.tv/community/index.php?/topic/2900-music-video-organization/
imvdb 2 Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 I know this thread is a little old but I just came across it. I'm one of the co-founders of IMVDb, and I just wanted to point out that anyone can add videos to IMVDb, not just artists. Around 85% of our information is added by directors, producers, and production companies. The rest are added by fans of the artist - very few (less than 1%) are added by the actual artist. Not sure where you read that only artists can add videos (if we imply that somewhere, please let me know so I can fix it), but it is not true. I agree, that'd be a ridiculous way of going about it. True, we are a company, but we have no plans to monetize the API. We started this database for the exact reason you are looking for a music video database - there is no dataset that is specifically dedicated to the unique data structures of music videos, and we were tired of wading through 100 live performances and video trailers to get to the actual music videos. We're a small team but we are continuing to grow, so if you're looking for a music video database to use as a data source for videos, give us a go! If you've got issues or questions, feel free to let me know at adam@imvdb.com. 2
