Jack Burton 98 Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 I've noticed this happening a lot lately, and it's really not the biggest deal, I'm probably just impatient (it also hurts when trying to show the wife how awesome emby is and that we don't need cable). If I haven't used my server for any extended period of time (haven't fully tested, but let's say a couple hours), it seems to take awhile to get things going. First off, I had a similar issue a while back and it was caused by my hard drives sleeping (which I've fixed), so that shouldn't be the issue anymore. When booting up Theatre, I'll either see the main movie screen, with artwork for the highlight movie, all movies and favorites, but nothing on the right widgets. After the highlight movie scrolls through 3 or 4 titles, that screen goes black too. No amount of waiting seems to load up the rest of the content. TV is always completely black, with just the outlines of the first widget. Alternately, I'll just see a spinning circle. Again, left it for over an hour and no change (I should add sometimes things work perfectly as well ) Anyway, I'll launch the server (windows 7) to check things out, and every time this issue occurs, it's the same thing. The server looks fine, but when I select home, things don't load. The left panel shows all options (home, metadata, manage server, etc) except for the actual content. No movies, tv, channels, etc. Generally this takes anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes to become accessible. Basically, my question is if the server goes to sleep when not in use and it's simply waking up (my PC isn't the best) or if it's something else entirely. Also, if it is the server sleeping, can this be disabled? Thanx for powering through my first world problem. Any info is, as always, very much appreciated. Also, keep up the amazing work, absolutely love Emby!
Pais 125 Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 I have the same thing happening a few times a day. A library scan will resolve it for me. It's rather annoying, but for now at least there's a workaround.
legallink 187 Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 My experience is this is hard drive driven. When I moved my cache and images to an SSD, I solved a lot of these issues of images and screens with images populating, but perhaps I am talking about something unrelated. The only thing for me that takes a long time to load is the Live TV guides. Everything else is pretty snappy, although I do have to "refresh" a screen sometimes to get it to load. I've never been patient enough to see if it would load after an hour.
Pais 125 Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 None of my data drives sleep. My OS is on an SSD.
legallink 187 Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 None of my data drives sleep either. However, the response time solved my problems. My statement above was not about drive sleeping It is more indicative of the amount of data that has to be transferred in a very short period of time to populate the screen views. If you can move your images/cache to an SSD, see if that solves your problem. I think it may be related to size of library, but I could be wrong. Our Library is about 12TB.
Jack Burton 98 Posted April 14, 2016 Author Posted April 14, 2016 Thought I had it. I had my 3 external drives awake all the time, but didn't do anything to my internal one, which Emby is installed on so I have that one awake now too. Really thought I had it but the issue persists. If I run Theatre, and watch about an hour of anything without touching any controls, Emby is non-responsive. Spinning circle, same issue as above when checking the server side of things, etc. Theatre needs to be shut down and have to wait for the server to "boot up". If it's not a hard drive sleep issue I really have no idea what's happening. Of course, my hardware is on the low end so maybe that has something to do with it.
Jack Burton 98 Posted April 23, 2016 Author Posted April 23, 2016 Still not sure what to do about this. Generally, this is how things go after a movie or hour long show: I just watched a movie, and Theatre is now unresponsive (spinning circle). Launch the server, and select "Home". Again, spinning circle. Select "Dashboard", spinning circle again, and the widgets (Version box, active devices, recent activity, etc) are not loaded. Wait a minute. Devices box loads up. Wait another minute or 2. The rest of the boxes load. Select "Home" to make sure things are good. Can now access movies, tv, etc. Exit Theatre. Launch Theatre. Good to go again. Quite the production, and this is every time I play something longer than an hour. I'm thinking Theatre may not access the server while something is playing, and the server goes idle? I use a little program for my hard drives that writes a .txt file every 5-10 mins to prevent them from going to sleep. Maybe I can do something like that in the server folder? I've gone through my limited knowledge with this stuff and am at a loss now. Any thoughts?
Luke 42085 Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 I'm adjusting the sleep behavior for the next release. Thanks.

r4m3u5 29 Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 This is terrible in 5943 Beta - the EMBY service even wakes up "sleeping". After abt 2-3 minute it becomes responsive. When watching something it takes a while until it starts to idle but when it happens it won't come back to life w/o restarting the service. I also tried with the latest dev release - a lot better (as EMBY will wake up again after a while) but it's still unbearable. For the web client it's easily fixed by waiting and reloading the page but Theater sometimes becomes unresponsive and has to be restarted. Br /Jens

Br /Jens I can promise there is no difference in this regard between the current dev and beta versions. However having said that, thank you for testing the pre-release versions and taking the time to put that info together.
r4m3u5 29 Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 O.k. - just for the fun of it I switched versions again and dev seems to cope a lot better with it!? As additional info - the server log looks clean when it happens but Theater throws these messages when the problem becomes apparent: 2016-04-24 04:15:31.2510 Debug App: Exiting HttpConnection.OnReadInternal because nread=0.
