cbauer25 5 Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 I have a few movies (Terminator Genesys for example) that stutter and freeze. What I'm noticing is that anything about 5.1 audio is transcoding, and those are the movies that have issues. Wondering if there are settings somewhere that I can adjust to help with this. The other thing I notice is that Emby has a menu option during playback to change the audio track. On this file, it shows options for 7.1 TrueHD and 5.1 AC3. When I try to switch to 5.1 thinking that will solve the playback issue, it continue to play 7.1. AFTV2. Thanks.
ebr 16169 Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 Did you mean "above" 5.1 audio? If so, yes, that would cause a transcode in order to bring the audio down to something the FTV supports.
cbauer25 5 Posted April 9, 2016 Author Posted April 9, 2016 It does note that it is transcoding, but it stutters and pauses to the point it is unwatchable. Is that a server performance issue? The other way i was trying to solve it was to select a different (non 7.1) audio track from the playback screen. However on the AFTV that feature doesn't appear to work?

Yes, most likely. The other way i was trying to solve it was to select a different (non 7.1) audio track from the playback screen. However on the AFTV that feature doesn't appear to work? I'm not aware of any issues with audio track switching so we'll need to look at specifics of what you are doing. Media info on the item and transcode logs from when you do the switch. Thanks.
cbauer25 5 Posted April 10, 2016 Author Posted April 10, 2016 Here is the info you requested. Picture one is when I start the movie...you can see it is 7.1 TrueHD and it is transcoding. I pull up the audio options and switch it to 5.1. Picture two is after I select 5.1. You can see that it still shows 7.1 TrueHd and the menu still shows 7.1 selected...however it also states it is now Direct. Thanks. ebr 16169 Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 The OSD "gray boxes" will always show the default audio track for the item - it doesn't currently show the track that is actually playing (might be a nice enhancement though). In both situations, you actually are getting 5.1, correct? I think it is probably working correctly and it is only the menu that is not properly marking the selected track.

The checkbox always shows the default track and not the current playing one? That would explain alot. But that's a very bad design decision imho!

cbauer25 5 Posted April 11, 2016 Author Posted April 11, 2016 I'm finding that it is very inconsistent. I just tried it 10 times and it only seemed to switch once.

With the 7.1 track it will transcode and you will get 5.1 PCM. With the 5.1 track, it will direct stream and you will get 5.1 PCM. So, unless the two audio tracks actually contain different audio (like a commentary) you are going to be getting the same audio both times. The only issue is that, for some reason, it isn't able to properly determine the track to mark in the menu and, I believe, that is already fixed in the current beta.

How I was looking at it was checking what was marked in the menu (which we've determined is now fixed) and assuming that if the track was switched I would no longer have the stuttering video/freezing issues. If it is switching the audio, I still get the video issues. I think fixing the menu is a good step. I'll spend some time looking at server performance. Thanks for your help and your continued commitment!
ebr 16169 Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 If you would like to try the beta to see if the menu problem is fixed in this case, follow the instructions for the Fire here: Android Open Beta Testing
