As Abo said, the behavior you are talking about is a browser issue.  In order to make browsers faster, they don't re-load pages when you go back.  The forum is marking your thread read, but the browser is not refreshing its display when you return to the previous page.

 

At some point, Safari used to do this but I think even it has stopped now.

Ah ok, so I need to refresh the page to update the read status. Thanks. I can cope with that for the amount of time I use the search function.
