anderbytes 141 Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 hey just wondering if (direct) streaming (in Kodi) via https has a negative impact on transmission speed? Regards As all packets pass through HTTPS port, probably they all have the SSL header, making the packets bigger. But as hardware are more and more prepared to encryption... they process the local part of the process very quickly, which only leaves a small bytes header to increase needed bandwidth to send data. In general... I believe that we reached a level that encryption benefits are far superior than it's little cons. 1
horstepipe 422 Posted August 4, 2016 Author Posted August 4, 2016 (edited) I forgot about this topic a long time and today it came into my mind again. I compared streaming performance with and without https and there is a huge difference. Server has a max. upstream of 6MB/s, with https the upstream was only maxed out when multiple clients watched a movie. A single client watching a Bluray Remux caused very long buffer times. Without https the movie starts almost immediately. So the question is security. Even if the worst case occurs and login credentials are being captured, the attacker can only access Emby and not my whole NAS environment. So as long as I don't login with admin privileges from an open wifi hotspot the risk is quite manageable..? Please tell me if I'm wrong or if I overlook something Edited August 4, 2016 by horstepipe
anderbytes 141 Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 It depends, I believe. Risk is something very particular. What for you is nothing, for other people may be a major worry. In my opinion, unknown people using my bandwidth to see my stuff (including home movies, family photos...), is way worse than anything.
softworkz 5073 Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 I compared streaming performance with and without https and there is a huge difference. What you probably don't know for sure is if it's the client or the server or the network causing slow https transfers...
anderbytes 141 Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 True. Maybe hardwares involved (server, client, or both...) aren't so good in processing cryptography
horstepipe 422 Posted August 6, 2016 Author Posted August 6, 2016 yeah looks like it is the server because it happens on all my clients. I have a Synology DS414 but gonna upgrade to DS916+ soon, maybe it's gonna be different there. Thank you
