Can't Play .MKV Video Files

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi all,

I was able to successfully get my Emby server running on my Ubuntu server.

The only issue I have now is that it doesn't play .mkv video files. I'm assuming it's some sort of codec/transcoding issue?

I can play .mp4 video files just fine.

Is there something I should install to get the .mkv files to play?

Any help is much appreciated!  :)

Thanks!

Hi there, welcome. In order to best help you, please see how to report a media playback issue. Thanks!

Thanks for that! I've gone ahead and edited my original post to include the screenshot as well as the logs.  ;)

the server is unable to launch ffmpeg for some reason. i would check that these execuables have execute permissions

var/lib/emby-server/ffmpeg/20160215

the server does do this automatically but perhaps it didn't work in your environment.

I've checked and it looks like they have full permissions. I've included a screenshot. Does this look correct?

So, I restarted the server and went to try playing the video file again and it worked for about 2 seconds, then stopped and went back to video selection and an error whenever I try to play it again.

Looking over the server log for this one, it seems that the bitrate might be an issue? I've attached it to this post for any further insight.

I don't mean to leave you hanging, but right now i'm not sure because everything looks normal. if you lower the in-app bitrate setting to force video transcoding, does it work then? what about other browsers, any luck there?

That's ok! I found out what the issue was.

Turns out, I just needed more computing power to transcode the .mkv files.

I was initially running Emby on the 512 MB Ram/1 CPU server on DigitalOcean. I upgraded to the 2 GB Ram/2 CPU size and everything runs smoothly now.  :D
