Cannot playback recorded TV on Windows 10

I have emby server on a PC running Windows 10 using nextpvr as the TV service. I can watch live TV fine on a different Windows 10 computer with emby theatre as nextpvr always transcodes at the moment, but I cannot play recorded TV, I assume because windows 10 does not come with a mpeg2 decoder. I have tested this on a couple of win 10 pc's with the same result. I have tried installing lav filters on the PC but I assume because ET uses its own filters it won't use the filters I installed.

Is this a known issue, does anyone else have this problem or am I the only one?

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Rohan.

My problem sounds very much like another problem in this forum where recorded TV plays audio but not video, but as my problem is a fresh install on two separate machines with win 10 that has never had ET on them previously, the fix suggested to delete the comobjects folder doesn't work.

I've been doing a little experimenting and found that if I change the streaming boats down very low in et, it will force transcoding and recorded TV will play.

So I think this is probably a codec problem. Is the mpeg2 codec enabled in emby? If not, is there a way I can turn it on to test my theory?

It may actually be an audio issue. Is the sound on your tv stream AC3? ET plays mpeg2 just fine. I have live tv and my recordings play perfectly. But if I misconfigure my audio (I have a surround sound receiver) the file won't play. When you stream to another computer, the server transcodes and it works, but on the main computer you have direct access and it tries to direct play it, and you encounter issues. Check your bitstreaming settings, windows audio settings and (if you have a receiver) make sure it's compatible. If that doesn't help, what filters are you using? EVR+ or MadVR?

Hi doofus, thanks for your reply.

I don't think it's an audio issue as I have the same problem on 4 different computers with Windows 10 and all of them play every other file format fine, but not the .ts file created by nextpvr. The recorded shows themselves play fine on the web and Android apps. My htpc is connected to a receiver and I recently setup Windows audio again due to a different issue, and everything works fine on it now except recorded TV. Playing live TV is fine, but this is, I believe, because emby server transcodes all nextpvr live TV as discussed in the nextpvr forum here.

I will try copying one of the recorded shows into my movie directory on my nas and see if the server treats it any differently or if it plays it at all. I will also go through the metadata report and see if I have any other mpeg2 format files and try one, if I have any.

A bit more testing:

Play live TV and the server says it's transcoding and I can see and hear it in et.

Play recorded TV and the server says it's direct and on et I only hear audio.

Copy the recorded TV file to my movie folder on my nas and play it and the server says it's transcoding it and I can see it and hear it in et.

I'm officially at a loss.

ET has just updated itself to 2.1.2 and the problem has resolved itself. I can now watch recorded TV.

Any idea what was in the update that would fix it?

Well done. To be honest i"m not really sure. It probably got resolved as a result of other changes, basically, similar issues with others where we used a sample file to trace down an issue and fix it. Thanks.
