How to Auto-start ET in Windows 10?

So, I have Windows 10 configured that on boot, the HTPC user account is auto-logged in, and the Windows desktop comes up. At that point, I want to have ET started.

 

Normally, the way to do this is to have a shortcut link to the application executable placed in:

c:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

 

So, I assumed that a shortcut pointing to C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Theater\system\Emby.Theater.exe placed in the above directory would do the trick.

 

It doesn't work.

 

And if I look at the Start-up programs tab in Task Manager, instead of "Emby Theater", it's just called Program, and does not have the ET icon showing.

 

This technique works for other applications that I want to have auto-started, but is not working for ET.

 

I must be doing something wrong. Can someone please give me a clue.

Yes, I saw that thread. I might have to use it as a last resort, but I'd much rather just autostart ET... Thanks, anyway.

After adding did you go to Task Manager -> Startup and enable it?

Yes, I did (actually, I think the act of adding in the shortcut enables it by default so it was enabled when I checked).

Hmm.. I added a shortcut to test and it was listed as disabled and simply as "program" as you stated. I enabled it in the Task Manager manually. I then rebooted the computer and Emby Theater loaded up on Startup. Just like Steam, Battle.net and Skype and a couple dozen other utilities. After the reboot, looking at the Startup Tasks it changed from Program to Emby.Theater.

 

I suggest deleting your current shortcut and re-adding it by dragging the emby theater executable into the Startup folder using the right-mouse button. You'll get a menu that has create shortcut on it.

Well, I tried recreating the shortcut using the manner you suggested, but no change. Following a reboot (several), Task Manager still shows it as " Program" with the right click menu greyed out for most entries, while Windows Explorer shows it as the expected shortcut...

Hmm.. My shortcut is in the Startup folder. Your Startup folder is also named differently as Start-up instead of Startup.  I would suspect just adding a shortcut to the Progams folder merely enables it to show on the Start Menu.

Well, all I can say is that the other shortcuts in that folder (misnamed or not) work as expected. For example, I can set either the Plex client, or the Roon client to autostart as I wish by enabling the relevant link.

Hope you can get it resolved. As I said above, Emby Theater loads on Windows Startup for me. Even switches to Full screen.

Can I ask: does the shortcut link in your folder have any parameters appended to the executable path? Perhaps that's the issue...

OK, I just deleted everything and started afresh. Now it's working. Sigh. Probably finger trouble somewhere along the line and I couldn't see it. Thanks again for the suggestions.

Also take a look at EventGhost.  It can control launching things at startup and can handle automating all kinds of other things for you if you really get into it.

The other method in the thread quoted in the 2nd post is much nicer, in that it loads straight in and you don't see the desktop at all. Definitely preferable for me

Some people probably want access to the desktop so they can use things like Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, Movie Rental Services or access their Cable Company's player.
