Some questions before I think about moving to emby

Hello, I decided to check up on Emby yesterday and I was surprised on how usable it is vs how it used to be.

I have been in the Plex team for awhile (when ever it was that they added chromecast support for the paying users I started using it / got lifetime) however it has been very obvious that there has been some mistakes on their side with making it so their desktop player is no longer able to keep up with the bleeding edge.

I'm thinking of grabbing the lifetime here but before I do I want to double check some information (honestly even if somethings are not ready yet for me I'll most likely just come back to check in a few months)

If I remember correctly emby is open source (and I do see the github page), what about the the various programs like the emby theater and the android app? I am aware that kodi is obviously open source but I always felt that kodi was really heavy.

What sort of support should I expect as far as being able to play bleeding edge files.. (lets be blunt here I'm talking about anime) With Plex's new beta player PMP it will basically never be able to be a good way to watch anime due to the fact that they are using liblass and I actually found that during some OP/EDs for shows I would get lots of frame drops.

Are ordered chapters supported? If you don't know what these are I'll try to explain.. but this is already a wall of text.

How stable is everything so far? I've been having some issues but that is likely due to the fact that I just scanned in about 3TB of files or so .. my computer cried a bit when I did that =p .. but the good thing is it seems that the devs here seem to think the same way I do about organization so I don't actually need to do much work to make it nice and clean.. and even my retarded anime muisc section actually was almost 100% working when it was most likely 20+ hours to get working on plex

What issues do you guys currently have with the current build? You can correct me if I am wrong but emby is still sort of beta right?

And one last thing for now .. how exactly does the instant mix work? I can assume how it works by what I have listened to so far.. and it is pretty dope.. but I am just curious... It seems to enjoy having 300GB or so of FLAC to work with hah

sorry for the wall of text

edit: I just found the http://app.emby.media/reports.html  thing.. and wow that is pretty sweet. Reminds me of some of the software I have worked with for classes and comparing it to 'consumer' versions being so much more powerful.

edit 2: I've done enough research on my own to want to decide to support emby. =p I still am curious about the above though

Hello and welcome :) Yes the majority of the apps are open source under the github repo that you found. I'm glad to hear you were able to get your setup going quickly.

Instant mixes can be started based on songs, genres, artists, or albums. It is mostly genre-based and creates a large random playlist (that generally begins with whatever you created the instant mix on).

Yup some minor stability issues but those will be sorted over time.. the most important thing is I don't feel limited by the server software at all at least so far =p... and if I do I'll make suggestion to try and see if that can be fixed.

edit: I don't think I've ever had the instant mix start with what I start it on... Is it because I'm not selecting a single song perhaps? I often just select the folder as that is how I have it organized..that for some reason  I can't seem to explore through but I'll deal with that some time later I need to focus on my college classes for the next few weeks =p

If you start with a folder, how would the mix start with what you started on...?

@@Randomacts,

From my point of view, Emby is a GREAT software that aims high and has potential to be the reference as media server and management.

Does it have flaws? Of course. But it's expected because it's very new (as Emby label), and has lots of room for improvements.

I put my faith on it and even put my money on it, for contribution.

So... be patient with bugs, report as needed and don't hesitate to come here if you have any questions. This forum's users are very friendly to help, and devs are very attentive.

Yeah it has been pretty good so far. Honestly the best thing that is most likely overlooked is how the transcoder is adaptive. It is pretty dope not having to worry about if I drop into 3G and it will keep working.
