Shortcuts to Movies are no longer working

After the 3.0.5899 update this morning I noticed that Libraries with shortcuts no longer work. I am not sure if it was this update or one of the recent ones caused the problem.

I use shortcuts all of the time and have been using them since MB 2.  

I have checked that the shortcuts point to the folders and they are on a UNC path that is connected.

I have also rescanned the library twice.

The movie also plays in Theater and Emby Classic when accessed thru the normal library not the library with the shortcuts.

 

Now to the unusual thing is 3 movies show up in one shortcut library and 1 shows in the other library. Both show as DVD's when they are MKVs. Neither will play but appear normal.

 

What happened? I hope you did try to take away shortcuts again

Can you post a server log to verify your configuration is correct.

it wasn't removed, so something must have happened.

They only change to the server that I'm aware of is the installation of Firefox which should have no impact. When I get home, I will delete the two libraries and readd them,

I've been having a similar issue for a couple weeks, just been too busy to research it until now.  I've attached my server.log file.  It should have a library scan and an attempt to browse the library in question.  There are four libraries I use shortcuts in: Victorian, Victorian Series, Joshua, and Joshua Series.

 

This configuration was working wonderfully until a couple weeks ago, sorry I can't remember the exact date.  I was on the BETA upgrade option and today updated server again hoping there was a fix.

Just back from vacation and I can provide more info:

 

I am using Version 3.0.5905.0 and shortcuts are still not working.

 

Attach you will find my Libraries, File structure along with the shortcut properties, and a fresh server log and the Metadata of one of the three shortcuts it seems to have found out of 39. As I stated before the found shortcuts do not work.

Attached you will find a server log. @ 2016--3-21 13:17:26 you will find where the shortcuts started to have a problem. I add a shortcut library with 4 shortcuts in it and a scan started. The shortcuts were found but at 13:17:37 it was unable to find linked item at path.

I have also included a image of the shortcut library with the shortcut properties and an image of the actual library where the media resides.

 

 

I hope this helps in resolving the shortcut issue.

I'm curious why you do it this way instead of just adding the network location to emby to scan? How does having all those shortcuts improve the functionality? I use network shares and have never had an issue.

That is easy. I have all my libraries pointing to network locations. I have 2 libraries that use shortcuts.

1 Library. Points to movies in the libraries ( Over 1800 Movies) that I want to watch in the future and it makes these easily accessible thru Samsung client rather than going thru 1800 movies when I have just 4 shortcuts shown in the example.

2. I have a shortcut library that points to Oscar winners. I could have a separate library for these but I have Kids movies in a library separate (for obvious reasons) from movies and one of those was a Oscar winner. You can't put a movie in two different libs.

 

I wish I didn't have to use shortcut but was forced to go that way.

 

The point of this discussion is just that they have been working and stopped working not due to anything the people who use them did. I am not the only one affected.

Emby Server Updated late yesterday with Version 3.0.5915.0. Checked the shortcut issue with Metadata manager and went WOOOHOO. There my three test records were.

 

 

So I went to the web client and found Nothing.

 

 

It was the same in EMC.

 

For some reason I tried Theater. Then thing start to get strange.

The three test movies are scrolling in the library screen of MyPicks.

 

 

So I clicked on All Movies and there was nothing there. Then I clicked on the Movies in the highlighted  box and the detail page appears.

 

 

But the movie is an MKV and it is treated as a DVD as indicated in Metamanager and Coverart. When I hit play nothing happens. But I can play the trailer?????

Couldn't you uses favourites and collections to achieve almost the same functionality?

I did go to collections to get around this limit. I was using folder [boxset] and had to eliminate those and go with the new methodology for Collections (which when created, use shortcuts of a fashion). In the long run this is probably the way to go since the Devs haven't  wanted to support shortcuts for a long time. There are benefits for using the new methodology but the main one is you aren't forcing a folder structure. You can put movies of a collection anywhere.

 

Favorites is another issue. I am thinking of using a collection for the movies I would have in my category 1. If I used Favorites as you suggested I couldn't use Favorites as it was intended which I do.

 

I could have used simlinks but choose not to go that route.

PS The conversion of the 130+ boxsets took 3 days but I think it will be worth it in the long run.

If you use hard (files) and junction (directory) symlinks, it will work better than using Shortcut (*.lnk) files. Symlinks do mean you have to muck around in the file system using the command line though. When using symlinks, the OS and file tables take care of the linking the Apps running on the machine don't know they are links elsewhere. With shortcuts, you're relying on the App and Emby Server to know how to deal with them. Easier to let the OS do it as it is designed to do this kind of thing.
