Lighthammer 91 Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 I finally got around to updated the emby theater client. Having had this server up and running for a very long time, now its blasting me for a premier account. There was nothing around to indicate I'd remotely have to worry about this. I tried going back to my old theater client and of course those installers no longer work since they're live installers. I don't have the cash to throw around or I'd simply buy the lifetime package, though I've supported the community through constantly helping to clean up data problems I encounter on the various databases. I'm feeling really burned by this.

Lighthammer 91 Posted March 8, 2016 Author Posted March 8, 2016 http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/29908-previous-version/ Thanks. Still not thrilled with this direction. I thought it was great to add value to get the Premier versions. There's been so much backlash when people take something that was free and change it to be not free that I felt this community would never do that. I'm still feeling burned by this :-\
ebr 16174 Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 Thanks. Still not thrilled with this direction. I thought it was great to add value to get the Premier versions. I'm still feeling burned by this :-\ The thing you had for free is still free and still available. If you pretend you never heard of Emby Theater 2.0 absolutely nothing has changed and you haven't had to pay for anything you didn't before. Now, if you want to take advantage of a brand new shiny toy, then, yes, that sometimes involves costs (on everyone's end ). 2
egold 10 Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 You still feel burned and your not thrilled with the direction. lmao you still have your free version. You could of gotten in when it was cheaper but I'm sure that never crossed your mind to support people who are building business. ' Sent from my A1-840 using Tapatalk
Deathsquirrel 745 Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 The text immediately below the download link says this app requires premium. The text right below that includes a link to the older, free version of the software. Bait and Switch might be a bit strong
Luke 42078 Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 We work incredibly hard, and incredibly long hours. You might have noticed that people who file issue reports get almost immediate responses from us here in the community. That work is all very costly for us, and that is why the app requires Emby Premiere. Hopefully you see value in how hard we're working to make it the best that we can, but if not, we do have free options available. Feedback from users who are running the app has so far been very positive, and we thank everyone for the support. 2
Harblar 29 Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 (edited) I've been using Media Browser as my primary means of feeding my movies to my Theater setup for over 6 years. For the vast majority of that time, it has been a free service. It has grown to be one of the few media interfaces in existence with such a universal presence (save for Plex, which is only barley on the same level, imo). I don't remember exactly when I bought my "pemiere access", but I'm fairly certain the server app hadn't even been released at the time, yet. That's how solid it was, even back then. You can b*$#& about them baiting and switching all you want , but show me where (anywhere) that they are actually screwing you over. $99 for a lifetime worth of software updates from a group that has been well established for the better part of a decade? Maybe if they were charging $120 a year (like Adobe Photshop) I'd agree with you. The fact of the matter is they are putting out a product with (and believe me... I checked for standalone alternatives) the only viable option for feeding the highest quality Audio/Video to a dedicated Reference Theater Grade setup, not to mention their dedication to serving media to as many mobile platforms as they can. On top of that, they are also very concerned and involved with any problems the end user might be encountering. But please... Show me a cheaper/free version of a media management system that delivers even a fraction of what Emby offers. Honestly... I'd love to see that! These guys(gals?) work hard, put out a stellar product, and (in all reality) have only recently started asking for any kind of compensation to use all of these great features. But your right... they really are just grabbing for money. That's obviously why they continue to readily offer the previous versions (the one's I, and many others, have been happily "living" with for months/years) free of charge. What I find Really funny is the fact that you have 100+ posts on this forum, but never bothered to search for (or read the first page of this board) for the actual answer to your gripe... it's been documented in several threads already... Including a sticky labeled "Previous Version". To your other complaint... Don't have the cash to throw around? It's $5 a month! Give up a coffee once or twice a week. Save up and buy the lifetime in a year or so. It's not that much so quit Bitchin! Edited March 9, 2016 by Harblar 3
elshagon 44 Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Probably should have called the new Emby Theater a different name to differentiate it from the free version that way people wouldn't think they are losing something but rather see it as two different products, one free and the other paid. Other than that I have no problem with supporting all the hard work the developers have been doing. It seems things are really moving forward quickly now.
Guest asrequested Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 So you're bothered that it should be free and it isn't? Luke and the team have/are working very hard to give us an excellent media platform. Show some gratitude! Wouldn't you expect to get paid for something you do? These guys deserve our gratitude. Many of us are proud to support them for what they've provided us. They've never promised that new developments would be free, and $99 for lifetime is a steal!
shaun_rendell 0 Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Perhaps a good compromise is to offer Emby theatre as a standalone app to purchase. There is a Windows 10 app that offers this I know it's by a different developer but the principle is the same. That way people who don't want all the premiere features but would the app can contribute towards its development.

There's been so much backlash when people take something that was free and change it to be not free that I felt this community would never do that. I'm still feeling burned by this :-\ I don't routinely use Emby, I feel it still has a ways to go... BUT it is the only software I support monthly (because they get more that way). I do so because they are supportive of their community, and try extremely hard to put out a quality item. Did you notice how quickly you received a response? Where else would you find that. Heck look at all the kickstarts around that have failed and no one ever responds. I think of Kodi and NextPVR people routinely never get help there. IMO this is a great team and a great product, they deserve every penny they get or don't get (in some cases). I intend on supporting them, even if I never used it. But I can understand where some may not feel the same, and that is fine. As others said, there are still the older versions around. Personally, the new EMBY Theater is a massive step forward in my reasoning. Edited March 10, 2016 by KarterJK 2
