Slow Pictures / Metadata

So it seems to me that Emby stores the metadata and pictures for shows/movies in the folders of the video files themselves, rather than in a database somewhere. 

 

Is this the case?

 

I asked because whenever I started up Emby, i have to wait for all of these drives to spin up before I ever get a picture or can view movies.  Other programs I've used have that data there instantly.

 

Is there something I can do (or something I am doing wrong) so that I'm not waiting forever for a ton of different drives in different locations to spin up, or is this just the nature of the beast and files are store in those actual drives and not my C: drive?

Not by default, only if you enabled (opt-ed into it).
