thomrg 0 Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 HI everyone, I am new to the site, and excited about Emby and it's possibilities. My question is pretty basic... I understand the concept of using Emby to deliver multi-media from my personal server to all of my devices using Emby client aps. I initially want to use the Samsung Client app (version 1.0.6) on my D-series Samsung TV to connect to my server. My TV and server are on a wired gigabit ethernet network. Does the Emby app also allow me to browse and view ordinary web video content streamed from any website (like PBS, Comedy Central, CNN.com, ABCNEWS.com, etc) That is, can I use the Emby Samsung app to navigate to a website, click on videos or their links, and watch them either in a browser-like window or full screen on my TV? Thanks for you help on this. Emby looks amazing. thomrg
Luke 42077 Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 Hi, welcome. We do have a chrome app that can import videos from websites. @@techywarrior can probably explain it better than i can.
techywarrior 689 Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 Hi Thomrg, What Luke is alluding to is a combination of the IPTV plugin (for Emby Server) and my Chrome Companion. Basically the combination allows you to add videos from the web directly into Emby. HOWEVER, there are some limitations which you would need to test to see if it is going to do what you want. Install the IPTV plugin from the Emby Server's dashboard then install the Chrome Companion. Go to a webpage with a video on it, open the Chrome Companion and go to the Find Videos tab (last one on the bottom). If it is able to detect a video on the page it wil list the URL(s) and allow you to name and add the URL to Emby. Most of the video sources you mention try to limit access to their content but the IPTV plugin and the Chrome Companion are both free so no harm in testing it out for yourself. Once the video is added into Emby you can use the metadata manager to add more robust information about it. 3
thomrg 0 Posted February 17, 2016 Author Posted February 17, 2016 Hey Luke, Techywarrior Thanks for your help on this... Lots to learn here. If I follow you... once I install the IPTV plugin and Chrome Companion, I navigate to webpages from the Server web app and not the Samsung client? And the web video actually downloads to my server library for later viewing? Or am I getting this all wrong? thomrg
techywarrior 689 Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Install IPTV plugin on Emby Server, install the Chrome Companion in your Chrome browser (any computer that can access your Emby server is fine), navigate to a page in Chrome, open the companion (it will ask for the server IP and user/password if set) then go to the Find Video tab (bottom tab). You should be presented with the URLs of any videos it finds (I try and remove known ad networks). You can then add them to the Emby server but it just is a reference to the video URL. Emby doesn't download the video, it will stream it when you play (not 100% sure but the channel download plugin MAY allow you to download the files). Hope that helps.
thomrg 0 Posted February 18, 2016 Author Posted February 18, 2016 I totally get it now. Thanks so much. I'm looking forward to getting up an running in the days ahead. Regards, thomrg
