blade005 185 Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Emby Server: Version 3.0.5869.0 I have SAVE METADATA INTO MEDIA selected in the Emby Server and always have. I added a movie yesterday and don't see a movie.xml file in the folder as expected. The metadata is populated for the movie and displayed in clients, but it is not being saved in the media folder as it has in the past. I don't think it is hidden, as I have 'show hidden files and folders' turned on in Windows Explorer.
Koleckai Silvestri 1154 Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Is there an NFO file? That is the "new" format for saving metadata.
blade005 185 Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 (edited) Is there an NFO file? That is the "new" format for saving metadata. No. No NFO file either. Under Metadata - Services - Metadata Savers, I don't have NFO selected and would like to stay with XML files, if possible. I don't use Emby metadata manger for all metadata additions and editing and would like to see the ability for XML creation to remain. But, to my initial issue. I don't see any metadata information written (XML or NFO file) in the media folder, even though that option is selected in Metadata - Basics. FYI. I am seeing the same issue in both Movies and Television. No XML or NFO files are being written. Edited February 10, 2016 by blade005
Solution Luke 42079 Posted February 10, 2016 Solution Posted February 10, 2016 Xml saving has been moved to the Xml Saver plugin that we announced several months ago, so make sure to install that. 2

CBers 7451 Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I've just gone over to the darkside (NFOs) after using Emby (xml) for years. The XML Saver plugin works fine though.

CBers, Is there a discussion in the forum on the advantages of NFO vs. XML? I still manage some metadata outside of Emby Metadata manager and XML is still the default. Is there an advantage to NFO that would pull me over as well? :-)
Luke 42079 Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 it isn't about which one is better. More applications support nfo's compared to media browser 2's custom xml format.

Thanks for the assistance. Just wasn't sure if perhaps features or input tags might be missing if I stayed with xml format.
Gaz 20 Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 So thankful I found this thread as I had no idea we had to install an XML plugin now and that we'd moved over to NFO files! If I change the config over to using NFO's I'm guessing that the old xml files will still remain in the media folder? Would it be a good idea to do a mass deletion of .xml files from our media folders as surely we don't need both or am I overlooking a reason for keeping them? Cheers guys
Luke 42079 Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 You can just change the setting without making any changes to your files. it will be fine.
lorac 118 Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 I've noticed that even though I have NFO as my preferred local metadata reader emby still reads the xml files in the metadata folder that is generated by MCM. I can tell this because the xml doesn't the list actors for the individual episodes. I don't see any way to have MCM put the XML files in the root of the season folder or have emby store nfo files in that directory.30 Rock - S01E01 - Pilot 720p HDTV H264 AC3 2006-10-11.xml.xml]
Luke 42079 Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 Probably because an nfo isn't there are the time of the refresh so it uses the XML

Your example shows a combination of MCM and Emby metadata. MCM still generates <GuestStars>|Jonathan Palmer|Marc Gomes|Marty Zagon|Jo-Ann Dean|Dondre T. Whitfield|Christine Firkins|</GuestStars> tag for actors. Season and Episode metadata are two different things. Emby will store season.nfo in season folder (Metadata-services-(drop-down list) seasons). MCM doesn't have any season metadata and depending on your settings will delete the season.nfo during clean-up process. MCM metadata works for about 90% of Emby's needs but if you have MCM generate Kodi/XBMC nfo and have Emby read nfo you will get better results. Edited February 21, 2016 by Happy2Play
Luke 42079 Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 Looking at the code, this should still work, so he doesn't' really need to change anything MCM still generates <GuestStars>|Jonathan Palmer|Marc Gomes|Marty Zagon|Jo-Ann Dean|Dondre T. Whitfield|Christine Firkins|</GuestStars> tag for actors. But since no other application besides Emby uses this xml format, there isn't really much of a reason to keep pouring effort into it. This is good advice if you have MCM generate Kodi/XBMC nfo and have Emby read nfo you will get better results.
lorac 118 Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 What I see happening is that if series.xml is present that gets read before tvshow.nfo (perhaps because it is found first?). As such I don't get to see who the actors in the show are.

lorac 118 Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 Nevermind. I was just looking in the wrong place. Thanks for the help though.
Koleckai Silvestri 1154 Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 I just ended up deleting all my XML files and leaving the NFO files. Cleaned some things up. Messed up others. For instance, I don't have the box for extrathumbs checked and always get extrafanart and extrathumbs folders which just contain multiple duplicates of the images in the main folder.
