External connection fails and Emby Connect too

Recommended Posts

Hello all. I just setup Emby and locally I can access it and view it with no problem. I have signed up for emby connect, authorized a user, and confirmed the email.

I have forwarded both 8096 and 8920 on my router and have also added firewall exception on the windows 8.1 machine with both those ports.

When I try to access via my public ip:8920 or public ip:8096, I get a time out. When I try to use emby connect or emby app on my android device, I get invalid user and pass. I have tried resetting the pass and everything. What am I missing?

Hi, welcome. Can you try stepping through our connectivity troubleshooter?

Let us know at what stage you get stuck, Thanks!

Already ran through that. I actually found another post shortly after posting mine from user Jobber8742 with the same issue it seems.

I have plex running on the server as well. I don't know if that would cause a conflict. I don't think it would since it uses different ports.

Hi, thanks. since you ran through it, at what point did you get stuck and run into something that wasn't working? Or did it all work?

I didn't get stuck. I followed the guide completely. Opened the port on the firewall (public, private, domain). Allowed port forward on the router.

Server is running. Have tried rebooting everything. Router and server. And nothing. When I try to use EmbyConnect/Android App, I get invalid user/pass. When I try to manually navigate to the server using a desktop I get timeout.

When i type a netstat -an i see that the ports 8096 and 8920 are listening. Only local IP's have established connections to those ports.

Does canyouseeme.org show the ports are open on your home network?

Is this manual test inside or outside of your network? And are you testing using the internal or external address? Thanks.

Yes it can see both HTTP and HTTPS ports.

Outside of my network. From my office and cellphone network. I am testing with my external address. Both via the IP and using a ddns service

Are you using your forum id a password when using Emby Connect?  If you are using WANIP or DDNS are you using your local account name and password?

I actually just solved my problem about 15 minutes ago. I deleted my port forwarding range on the router and entered a single port forwarding and rebooted the router and now it's working. Make sure after you set up the port forwarding because if it's like mine, when you hit apply, it doesn't actually apply until you reboot. On mine, I could not see the port on canyouseeme.org. It is working now.

I set same user and path for both forum and local user

Well done :)

I'm still not able to log in though.

I Uninstaller everything. Rebooted. Reinstalled. Rebooted. Still same issue.

Ok, so I was able to advance a bit. I did a password reset via the app.emby.media link and made the password different than the local user. I was able to log in. I am then taking to "select a server" when I click on my server, it gives an error saying unable to connect to server. Make sure it's running and try again. I can confirm the server is up and running.

I am able to access the website via public IP but not through emby connect.

Ok, if that's happening then it's still not getting through.  Can I ask again about our connectivity troubleshooter?

How far did you get and at what point did it fail? Thanks.

Ok, I got everything working. I did a factory reset on my router and reconfigured the port forward. Deleted the firewall rules on my server and uninstalled emby. I basically started from scratch Reinstalled and configured everything. After I did the password change I was able to log in and access it remotely, locally, using android app, and http://app.emby.media.  Thanks a lot for the help. I mainly want to try out the live tv section once I setup my tuner to see if I will switch over from Plex. This app seems to have it ALL!!!
