trevisthomas 0 Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 I have all of the software up and functional as best as i can tell. I was pretty confused for a good half hour trying to figure out why i had no guide data, and no channels but after going into the scheduled tasks and manually running it things showed up. The place where i am stumped now though is with the quality of the Live TV content. Specifically the audio, it appears that using Emby, NextPVR's live content is downgraded to 2 channel stereo. Is that intentional? When connecting to NextPVR via the Kodi plugin 5.1 works fine. Does Emby not support that?
Luke 42077 Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 What Emby app are you trying to play from?
trevisthomas 0 Posted January 30, 2016 Author Posted January 30, 2016 What Emby app are you trying to play from? The fire tv app.
Luke 42077 Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 Ok, no, this isn't intentional. Do you mind providing the server transcoding log. Instructions on how to find server logs are here: http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/739-how-to-report-a-problem/ Thanks! 1

Instructions on how to find server logs are here: http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/739-how-to-report-a-problem/ Thanks! I just went down and did it again. I found a show that is absolutely 5.1 via kodi, but is stereo on emby. Here is the transcode log via dropbox. (i couldn't figure out how to attach to the forum) https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/26707/transcode-986bdbf0-7696-40c3-8fed-392f020b389c.txt
Luke 42077 Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 Hi, Are you sure it is only coming across as 2 channels? The transcoding log indicates that it's being encoded to 5.1: See the -ac 6 -codec:a:0 aac -strict experimental -ac 6 -ab 320000
trevisthomas 0 Posted January 31, 2016 Author Posted January 31, 2016 Yeah, I tried to decipher the log and it sure reads as though it sees the 5.1 but my receiver says stereo for every thing from the Emby app, switch to kodi and it says digital Dolby. I took a look at the settings in Emby wondering if there was something to enable pass through but I don't see anything like that. I do see a cinema mode that appears to be disabled in the trial. Could that be the issue?
Luke 42077 Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 No, cinema mode is a feature that plays trailers before movies, among other things. I wonder if the receiver just doesn't' support aac 5.1, or if the fire fv device isn't sending all channels for whatever reason. We'll probably need to wait for guidance from Ebr when he sees this tomorrow.
trevisthomas 0 Posted January 31, 2016 Author Posted January 31, 2016 Ah, ok. The reciever is a Denon, probably a about 1.5yrs old connected to the fire tv via hdmi. It's never failed to recognize a surround sound track before, I'll be very interested to hear what the culprit could be.
trevisthomas 0 Posted January 31, 2016 Author Posted January 31, 2016 According to this thread the first gen fire tv is the problem. Sigh, that's depressing. http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/28105-how-to-get-51-via-the-emby-app/
ebr 16169 Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 Correct. Unfortunately, VLC cannot play DD on any box running Android DTS and AAC 5.1 are supported but DD is not.
trevisthomas 0 Posted January 31, 2016 Author Posted January 31, 2016 Correct. Unfortunately, VLC cannot play DD on any box running Android < 5.1.1 right now. Even the 2nd gen Fire TV currently suffers from this because it is only based on Android 5.0. DTS and AAC 5.1 are supported but DD is not. So the issue is that the transcoder that Emby uses is converting the transport stream's embedded audio into a different format? I suppose it's a pretty dumb question to ask, but is there a way to opt out of that? Assuming the answer is almost certainly no, is there any device that i could use to get surround sound via Emby? Is a PC client my only option?
arrbee99 1815 Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 Would side loading Kodi onto the Fire TV help, or trying out a Raspberry Pi 2 ? Just a thought - am probably displaying my ignorance by even suggesting such a thing...
trevisthomas 0 Posted January 31, 2016 Author Posted January 31, 2016 My goal was to move from Kodi to Emby. Kodi works with NextPVR directly and already plays every file type that I've thrown at it.
arrbee99 1815 Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 Well if you use the Emby for Kodi plug-in you could use Kodi but with it accessing the Emby server / database. Obviously won't help if you're moving away from Kodi though.
ebr 16169 Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 So the issue is that the transcoder that Emby uses is converting the transport stream's embedded audio into a different format? Is a PC client my only option? No, we aren't transcoding in this instance. The player we are using (VLC) cannot play the AC3 stream so we downmix it to stereo. This is only a problem right now on Android
trevisthomas 0 Posted February 1, 2016 Author Posted February 1, 2016 Interesting. So it's not possible to just pass through? I guess whenever I see an update for the fire tv, I'll try it again. Thanks for the explanations,
ebr 16169 Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Yes, it is possible to pass it through but then VLC will crash .
trevisthomas 0 Posted February 1, 2016 Author Posted February 1, 2016 Lol. Fair enough. Maybe the VLC team will fix that too,
