auto-organize question

Can anyone tell me how to name episodes of MASH so they will be recognized.

thanks

The general recommendation is to name according to how it's named on http://thetvdb.com/

If only it were that easy then I wouldn't need to ask. The show on tvdb is M*A*S*H, this of course is an illegal name in windows. If you manually organize an episode it renames the file to M A S H, however auto organize will not recognize a filename of M A S H. I hope I do not have to manually do each episode like I did with the show "River" which auto organize was determined to move to another show on my server called "The River". Anyone know the secret?

thanks

You might have to do these manually, sorry. We would like to add a feature to remember the manual corrections but haven't gotten to it yet.

M-A-S-H seems to work.

Thanks, but the problem led me to filebot, which worked great at renaming the files. I am now ready for the next time auto organize acts a little retarded :)

That's not the whole story: This feature was implemented months ago but still hasn't been included in the Emby codebase as of today.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this will happen soon...

@@softworkz, in regards to this issue I think I want to change my fix to instead skip the organization process if no episode title is available. that is actually the root issue here. It used to throw an exception but a while back you changed that to just log it and continue. Do you remember why?

Posted

The reason is this:

  • Series, Season and Episode metadata can be queried from different providers
  • There are situations where we
    • Get metadata results for series but no results for episodes
    • Get metadata results for series but episode metadata is available for some episodes only but not for all episodes

=> These situations caused a NullReferenceException (because the episode title could not be determined and was null)
I just fixed this situation to continue with an empty episode title

There were no other implications. I think it is bad behaviour to let auto-organize fail just because it cannot determine the episode title.

In these cases (which are quite rare anyway) the filename does not contain the episode title.

But if the episode data will become available at a later time, it will be updated in the library and displayed correctly within Emby.

@Luke: But this is completely unrelated to the problem of the OP!

He is talking about the "series name", not episode titles.

My "Smart-Match" implementation fixes his problem, BTW!

Sorry, this is my mistake. I posted in the wrong thread. There's another topic about adding a new series folder. The series hasn't been scanned in yet but auto-organize processes the episode with an empty episode name. I originally solved that by skipping the organization if the series has no provider ids, but the root issue is the empty episode name, so I adjusted it to check for that.

OK, thanks for the clarification!

Unfortunately your change reintroduces the problem I described above:

Even for source files that are perfectly named already like "The Walking Dead - S06E08 - Start to Finish.mkv":

If the metadata provider for episodes does not have the episode data (yet), the episode is not organized at all.

Even worse: If you click the failed item in the auto-organize log, it displays an unrelated error message without any hint at the actual problem. (Almost nobody will dig through the log file to find the real cause)

IMO there is no reason to fail auto-organize just because we can't find the episode name at this point in time. The episode name is used for nothing else but to decorate the target file name. If we don't have the episode name, we can still organize the file without any drawbacks.

ok, what I'll do is update that restriction to only apply for automated organization.

The situation I described actually _was_ an "automated organization" situation, so I'm not quite sure about the meaning of this proposal....

I agree that the episode should be organized. However this raises the issue that now we have an episode with no name in the directory. Emby will just leave it. There should be a mechanism for automatic renaming of episodes already in the final structure.

I'm just going to allow it to keep organizing then.

Yes, in this case we will have an episode without name in the file system. This could be something like "The Walking Dead - S06E08 - .mkv".

But while the episode name might be missing, the file can still be identified easily. As soon as the metadata becomes available, Emby will update the library to present the episode with the actual title. If you are using Emby only, you wouldn't care much about the file name.

There is no built-in function available for this, but there is a simple procedure to achieve the same result:

  • Cut and Paste all episode files from the season folder to the auto-organize folder
  • This means that all files are going through the auto-organization process
  • If they can be identified correctly (series, season and episode number), the will be renamed and moved to the appropriate season folder
  • If not, you can manually move them back to the season folder and try to analyze why auto-organize failed...

Indeed. I've been using this for a while now. It just doesn't seem very elegant...

You will also end up with files with no episode title if the show does not have any english data on thetvdb. You can see this with the show Virage Nord. Metadata manager has a fit with this, but at least for the images you can pick all languages to see them. Auto organize does not have this option so you have no titles and no metadata. I fixed the episodes and thumbs with filebot by picking French and thetvdb, but can't figure out how to get the metadata for the episodes.

You will probably have to created it yourself.  IMDB lists it as a mini-series with no episode data, TMDB list it as a movie, and doesn't exist on tvdb, TVRage list the episode names with no data.

I just said I used tvdb with filebot to get the info. its series id 291314, has all the images and episode data. This is another auto organize problem, nothing to do with tvdb.

There is an easy way to handle this:

  • Go to Metadata-Manager
  • Select the series
  • In the series details, scroll down to "Metadata Settings"
  • In the two dropdowns, select the appropriate language/country
  • Click "Save" at the top

From now on, all metadata will be acquired for the selected language. You can perform "Refresh" to refresh all data and images.

If metadata is available for the selected language, it will be downloaded and applied to the series and all parent items.

And even better: Auto-Organize is affected as well, so episode titles will be acquired for the selected language!
