Multi Episode TV Show Naming

Recommended Posts

Thanks in advance for any help I get.  I'm having trouble getting multi-episode tv to work correctly.  For single episodes it works flawlessly--they get scraped and the metadata is correct, but nothing is scraped for multi episodes.  I'm using DVD format, so according to the wiki I should be able to do this:

\SERIES NAME

       \SEASON 1

                \series name s01E01-E04

                          VIDEO_TS

However, this doesn't seem to work.  In Metadata manger, it shows up as "series nameS01E01-E04" for the title and in Kodi, the Series name shows up with no episodes. If I manually add an episode number in the Metadata Manager, it will show up in Kodi that I have an episode available, but no info to go with it. I am getting this error in the server log:

Error in FillMissingEpisodeNumbersFromPath.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?  I'm sure there's something I'm not completely understanding.

I'm having the same problem on my FreeNAS Emby server 3.0.5786.0. Normal container multi-episodes works just fine, but with DVD folders I get the same error. Would be nice if you could manually add multiple episodes in the metadata manager.

On a different note still having to do with DVD. It does not recognize interlace. So it looks like crap in the web player.

And since this is my first post on the forum, I would like to thank the developers for an amazing program!

DVD folder rips are not a recommended structure, though they are supported by the server.  Normally I'd say you can just convert to mkv without further processing but if the material is interlaced I really do recommend running it through something like handbrake to fix that.  Not all the clients can deal with the interlaced video well and playback in a web browser is probably the least capable available option.

I actually got a blu-ray with interlaced hd content the other day.  Was shocked but handbrake fixed it right up.

What you should be seeing is one combined episode. Are you seeing that?

Good day,

I have:

\SERIES NAME
       \Season 1
                \S01E01-E04
                          \VIDEO_TS

No issue.

My best

Thanks to everyone for their replies.

DeathSquirrel, I appreciate the suggestion, but I have 50-60 DVDs already ripped from 10 years of WMC, so I'd rather not have to run them through Handbrake if I can find a solution for what I have.  Going forward though I'll give it a shot and see how it works.

Luke:

It just puts the file name in the episode name spot, so it could be what you're looking for, although from what I read in the wiki it seemed like going to the trouble of naming everything in the Name_S01E01-04 format would scrape info for those episodes, but it's entirely possible I misunderstood what it was saying.  I've attached a couple of screen shots so you can see what I have.  One is the directory tree showing the file structure and naming and the other is Media Manager showing one of the episodes.

It does not appear that anything is being scraped.  The Season number and Episode numbers are blank, and when I look at TV in Kodi I see the Series name but it has no episodes listed under it (sorry, Kodi's on a PI so I couldn't get a screen shot), so there's no way to watch it unless I go through the Video>Files menu and select one of the files in the Video_TS folder. If I manually add a season number and episode number in MM, then 1 episode will show up in Kodi.  I'll be glad to upload the logs as well if that will help.  Is there any sensitive data that I need to scrub first?

BTW, I really love the program so far, thanks for all or your hard work.

Pretty sure handbrake can do batch conversions

It sounds like it's not extracting the episode numbers from the folder name. Have you compared your naming to what's on the wiki? I'm guessing that's all it will come down to

It looks the same to me. That's why I posted the screen shot—maybe another set of eyes could see something I'm missing. One thing I noticed from super tester is I have the series name repeated on the episode folder, but I tried using what he had and it didn't make any difference.

I'm almost wondering if this might be your issue?

Looking at your screenshots, you have the folders as:

Moonlighting

   >Season 1

     >MOONLIGHTING_s01e01-e04

         >AUDIO_TS

         >VIDEO_TS

I'm wondering if the underscore in the m>s>m folder might be causing it to get confused somehow, like maybe it is looking for "Moonlighting" and only finding "Moonlighting_".  Would you try removing an underscore and replacing it with a space then rescanning or refreshing emby?  I don't know what I'm talking about, but who knows, maybe it will work.

From the wiki:

To be recognized as a dvd structure, the folder must contain either a VIDEO_TS subfolder, or a VIDEO_TS.ifo file. To be recognized as a blu-ray structure, the folder must contain a BDMV subfolder.

 \TV \Glee \Season 1 \Glee S01E01-E04 \VIDEO_TS

Notice how the folder matches the spelling, capitalization, and does not contain any underscores after the show name...that's why I had this idea.

I've identified a fix that can be made in regards to multi-part folder rips, although it's going to take some time before it reaches the stable release. It might hit beta later this week.

Moviemadnessman:  That didn't seem to make any difference.  Thanks for the idea.

Luke:

I'm looking forward to the fix, and thanks for your help.  After all of this discussion, I guess I have a question about what the expected behavior is when dealing with multi-episode disks. Is it supposed to show each disk as 1 episode, or should it list the episodes separately for each disk?  This isn't the end of the world--I've been watching them on WMC as a disk with 4 episodes for years anyway, it just seemed from the wiki that it might actually list the episodes somehow or show them separately.

It's just going to clump them together like it always has.
